The By-laws and Finance Committee reported that an application had been received for permission to reconstruct shop r-rerjise;; at the corner of Antig-.:a street and' Mocrhouse avenue, and as Antigua street required to be widened at that point, the owner of the property, had been nntilW that no building may be" erected within .;:! feet of the original centre line of the street. The owner was now enquiring what amount of compensation the Council wouid be -orepared to ray for the ft rip of land necessary for widening the street. The strip in question was :! £ chains in length and lfij feet in depth, tnd the committee recommended that the sum of 10s per foot be offered xor the land, the amount to include full rettlement for loss of trade in the shop and rent of dwelling during; the reconstruction period. The report was adopted. Works Committee. The report of tho Works and Sanitation Committee stated that a portion of the South Crescent road between Selwyn street and Ripling street on the north side required a certain amount of formation to complete this frontage. The estimated cost of the work was £SB 10s, and tho committeo recommended that authority bo given to put the work in hand.

A further slight subsidence of the Heathcote river bank to an extent of about two chains, had taken place in Victoria terrace. Instructions had been given to C!l this in with clinker or shingle, and it was to be kept under observation with others. There was another slip in Western terrace, and as this was liable to become dangerous at any time instructions had been given for about one chain of piling and timber sheeting: to be put in. Authority was asked to construct channels in Church street, Opawa, at a cost of £l2O. The roport was adopted. How Bridge Over Avon. The Council's delegates to the recent conference of local bodie3 to discuss the allocation of toe cost of erecting a new bridge over the Avon at New Brighton, when it was decided that the Council's proportion should be 17J per cent., reported that it had since been discovered that the section of the Public Works Act undor which proceedings for authority to erect the bridge were taken did not permit the Tramway Board to contribute 22 J per cent., as was anticipated, on the ground that the Board was not a local authority within the meaning of the Public Works Act. The conference decided to endeavoar to arrange to have a further interview with the Tramway Board for the purpose of ascertaining if some solution of the difficulty can be found. The report was adopted. Elmwood Park. In accordance with notice given, Cr. Carey moved: — (1) That Clause 8 of the Abattoir and Reserves Committee's report of January 26thi 1925, "informing the residents in the vicinity of Elmwood Park that if a tennis club is formed space will be allocated for tennis courts on,, tho western side of the park," be rescinded. (2) That the tennis club, if formed, be offered the eastern end of the park. (8) That the area on the western side bo set aside for a children's playground. The motion was seconded by Cr. W. J. Sim and carried after a brief discussion.
