JUSTICES' ASSOCIATION. (srrcui, to "thx truss.") - GKKMOUTH, September 1. "Fifteen Justices of the Pence at-' tended a meeting held this afternoon ■with the object of forming a "West Coast Justices of the Peace Association. Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., presided, fourteen apologies for absence were received. A resolution along the lines indicated was. carried, and a sub-committee, consisting of the chairman, and Messrs J. McLean, H. Eignell, A. Xaylor and W. 11. Kettle was appointed to draw up rules to be submitted to another meeting. Mr A. ISTaylor was appointed secretary pro tern.

Personal. Miss M. Beers, who has been staying with Mrs Carey, of Cobden, )cf r. | on her return to Christchurch this morning. Mr 11. Mears, of the railway clerical staff, left for Ashburton this morning on transfer. Mr I. W. James, superintendent of the State Mines, was a passenger for Christchurch by to-day's express. .. Bishop Brodie arrived from Christchurch his afternoon. Mr 8. Grooby, of the Railway Department, I'ukcrniro, arrived in Greymouth this afternoon on holiday. Colonel Young arrived in Grey-mouth by to-day's express. Mrs Cummings, of Kccfton, is seriously ill. Mi- C. Tringham, chairman of directors of the Eeefton Coal Co., is visiting Ecefton. Miss K. Morgan, of the Westland Hospital staff, returned from Christchurch this • afternoon.

Mr E. Egan arrived from Christchurch by to-day's express. Mr W. Desmond, a representative footballer, arrived from Christchurch this afternoon and will reside in Greymouth.

Mr W. Girling, butcher, is visiting Greymouth. Miss A. Humdd returned from Christchurch this afternoon.

Messrs W. D. Smith, F. Hawkin and F. W. Bostoek were 'among the passengers by to-day's express from Canterbury. Miss Hilda Xelson left ftjr Christchurch this morning. Mrs C. McKenchine left for Christchurch this morning. Miss E. McQueen, of Omoto road, has been appointed chief stenographer in the head office of the Eailway Department, Wellington. ' Miss McKee, travelling secretary of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union, arrived from Christchurch this afternoon.

Mr D. 11. Roberts lias been appointed to a vacancy on the committee of the West Coast "A. and P. Association. Mr W. 0. Bierwirth, of Ileefton, who received an injury to an arm last week is making favourable progress. Mr J. Comerford, of Inangahua Landing, is an inmate of the Eeefton Hospital. The condition of Mrs X. McAra, who is an inmate of the Grey Hospital, is showing a marked improvement. Constable D. W. Black arrived from Christ-church, this, afternoon, and will take over the duties of. Constable Beard, district clerk, until the latter is ■ able to resume. Mr D. Hebenton, Dominion organiser for the Eeform Party, and Mr D. Mc-Ghec, local organiser, are visiting West-port. The funeral of the. late Mr William Danks, which was held yesterday afternoon at Wcstport, was largely attended.. Among, those present were: ~Mr".\V.' McCormaek, manager of Millerton and Granity Collieries, Mr T. King, manager of the Millerton Mine, and Mr E. Lock, president of the Millerton Miners' Union. The-Rev. J. A. Jermyn read the burial service. Fire. Shortly before 4 a.m. the Fire Brigade turned out to an alarm given from the direction of High street. A licap of burning sawdust, which was in close proximity to the Technical School workshop, was extinguished by a few buckets of water. Monthly Statistics. For the, month of August the Customs duties collected at Greymouth • totalled £32,228 12s, and beer duty £lO9 lis Bd.. Twenty-six vessels of 'nn aggregate tonnage of 13,533 ton's entered the port of Greymouth, and an aggregate of ]5,487 tons crossed the bar on their outward journey. Mine Accident. Stewart Sinimonds, a married man with one child, was seriously, injured through a full of coal-in the Liverpool colliery this' afternoon. He Was conveyed to the Grey Hospital, where his condition is precarious. The- extent of his injuries has not yet been ascertained. ' Rugby Football. The challenge of the West Coast Rugby Union for the Seddon Shield has been accepted by the Marlborough Union, and the match will be played on the 19th ins.t. W. McNcight was awarded the trophy for the best exponent of" dribbling in the Bullcr team against Marlborough. Acclimatisation Society. ■At n. meeting of ,the Bullcr. Acclimatisation Society, Mr Stirton was elected a vice-president. It was decided to order four pairs of Canadian geese. The ranger reported regarding sawdust in the rivers, and stated that hares were increasing, but there were fewer ducks. It was decided to obtain the opinion of the Society's solicitor respecting sawdust in the district rivers.
