AMERICAN IRRIGATION SCHEMES. N.Z. OFFICER'S TOUR. (special to "the pkbss.") WELLINGTON, August 14. Mr R. B. Tennent, of the Agricultural Department, who visited America on behalf .of the Government to investigate irrigation in the Western States of the Pacific slope, recently returned after covering a distance of 11,000 miles in four months. Starting from San Francisco, hj» travelled down the coast of California to San Diego, and from there into the famous Imperial Valley, which lies half in California aiid half in Mexico. A detailed inspection of this large system was made, and the long journey from Mexico to Canada was commenced by way of the San Joaquin.Valley, the Sacramento Valley, through the titates. of Oregon and Washington, and into "Brutish Columbia. The States of Idaho and Utah were also included in Mr Tennent's itinerary, and every irrigat:on schetfie of any importanco was closely inspected. I a addition Mr Tennent spent a considerable time at the principal agricultural colleges of each State and mad© a thorough study of the principles and practices of • irrigation as taught nl those institutions. Mr Tennent was deeply impressed with excellent research work being carried on in those colleges, and he obtained much valuable knowledge bearing on important problems of irrigation practice.
