GRANT FOR TREE-PLANTING. \ {SPECIAL TO "THE psess.") J 'WELLINGTON. August 14. In the House this afternoon, the Hon. Mr Buddo asked tho Prime Minister if he liarl received a report from one oi the Public "Works engineers regarding the damage by flood to tlio banks of the Ashley River. Tho County Council stated that tho engineer had been impressed with the extreme damage done rccenlly, and had pointed out the dangers alic-ad unless something was done immediately. Mr Buddo urged the Government to make a grant immediately on the Public Works Estimates for tho planting of willows, otherwise this work could not bo undertaken until next winter. The Prime Minister said the report liacl not yet reached him, but lie understood it was <tp the way. Ho would be ghul to expedite it, and if it was essential that something should be. done urgently in regard to the -planting of willows, he wouTd bo very pleased to have a sum placed on tho Estimates for the work. This would later on be recouped to tho Governincut by the 'Trust. Ho recognise<l that there was a liability of damage being done, that a. number of peoplo would bo inconvenienced, and probably that they would suffer serious loss.
