j RANGIORA. On Thursday tho choir of Join Knox Church spent a very pleasart social evening at the residence of tie choirI master, Mr C. Gibbs Jordan. Advantage of the gathering was taken to make presentations to Messrs G. McAl;jine, John Marshall, and P. Blake in appreciation of their gratuitous work in enlarging the choir platforn in the •hurch. Mi" Jordan expressed tho pleasure felt by the member? of the choir in having the Rev. and Mrs Hutchison with them for the first time in a social way. MEDBURY. One of Ihe most enjoyable socials spent in the schoolroom took place last Wednesday, the proceeds of which were in aid of the Tennis Club. Excellent music was supplied for dancing by Messrs Cedric Brooker and B. Gellctly. Extras were played by Misses Slocombe and Nciinan and Mrs Honeybone. Mr Arthur Beaven was M.C. Songs were contributed by Mr J. Wright. Supper was provided by the ladies, and dancing was kept up till t-he early hours of the morning. amberley. At the fortnightly meeting of the Amberley Oddfellows' Lodge Bro. M. Lukey, N.G. presided. Sick pay, amounting to £4 10s7 and the hospital bed levy of £7 4s Cd were passed for payment. The district officers informLukey, N.G., presided. Sick pay, the Lodge an official visit on August 20th. The Blue Degree was conferred upon one member. On Thursday afternoon the Leithfield School basketball team journeyed to Amberley to play a return match, against the local school team. A veyv interesting and exciting game in a win for the Ambeney team by 2l> goals to 1-t. At the conclusion of the match, afternoon tea was dispensed. The schoolboys' annual seven-a-side tournament will be held in the Amberley Domain to-day. The trophy is a shield presented by Messrs Smith and EUis. Tliis tournament has always been a yerv popular one with the public, and it is anticipated that this year a very keen tussle for the shield will take place between teams representing the Broomfield, Balcairn, Sefton, Lcithfiekl, Saltwater Creek, and Amberley Schools. At a recent meeting of the Amberlev Caledonian Society, it was decided to' hold a euchre tournament and danca and anonymous donations of 101b tea, a bag of sugar, and crockery were received towards the prize fund. The second qualifying round for the Amberley Golf Club's championship and the sth round for the Campbell rose bowl will be played during tht> week-end. The following is the draw: Juniors: —J. SEFTON. Just before the local school children dispersed for the term holidays yes- ! terday afternoon, the headmaster, Mr A. J. T. Withers, on behalf of the pupils, asked Miss C. Down, who is leaving the district, to accept a Royal Doulton bowl and vase as mementoes of the 13 months spent in teaching at the Sefton School. The chairman of the school committee, Mr P. J. Thorue, who was unable to be present, sent an apology for his absence. The ladies of tho Sefton Methodist Church met at the residence of Mrs P. J. Thorne with the object of forming a ladies' guild in connexion with the church. The Rev. Cumming presided over a good attendance and officers were elected. It was decided to meet monthly. CUST. A lecture was given in the Institute Hall by Mr T. Moodie on the "Propagation of Plants." It was well attended and most interesting. The lecturer made special reference to those flowers which have made such strides in culture and so in popularity, of recent years—Carnations and Gladioli. He also made some remarks on roses and showed how easily they could be multiplied. A vote of thanks was passed to the lecturer on the motion of Mr Colin Mcintosh. The school children gave a fine display of drill, and Miss Mavis Rands contributed a couple of songs. The senior school children paid a visit to Kaiapoi on Thursday. A visit was paid to the AVoollen Mill, and the process of weaving was explained to them. Afterwards the girls played the local school at basket ball and the boys football. Kaiapoi won both games, the basket ball easily and the football by 3 points to nil. WOODEND. A very pleasant evening, organised by Mrs J. Little, was held in the Methodist schoolroom on Thursday. The room was decorated with vari-col-oured streamers and roses. A good programme began with a competition "Who am I?" which was won by Mr H. Ballinger, 'Miss Orchard gaining second place. A chorus, "All Hail" by male voices, was followed with a song by Nancy and Betty Chinnery, witn a community chorus, "Look for the Silver Lining.'' A hymn was sung next. A medley by the ladies, "House Hunting" lollo.vcd, a pme for which was won by Mrs Robertshaw with Mrs Roberts second. A song and chorus with obbligato was given by Nancy and Betty Chinnery. A Garden Group came next, in which the following took partßecitation. "Tho Glorv of the Garden." Mr L. Gibbs; recitation. Mrs Burnet: solo, "Cabbage Roses" Miss Avers; reading, '"Taith and a Garden."' Mrs Ballinger: solo "The Secret of the Stars,'» Allison Gilman : two rounds, "Fairy Ground" and "Fairy Whispers" were given by the ,ladies," and a character sketch by Mrs Quin. Supper w;as handed round, after which the ladies sang another round, "Good Night-to You ail." Mis 3 Percv. Mrs J. Little, and Miss Avers played the accompaniments. OMIHI. The attendance at the euchre tournaments held weekly continue to be excellent. After play, a few dances are held and supper is dispensed. The following have won prizes: Mesdames Wvllie, W. Little, and Miss Jones, Messrs Ferguson, DollaDj and Fleming.

GREENPARK. On Thursday afternoon the ladies of the Tai Tapu Methodist Guild, in conjunction with the Greenpark members, visited the home of Mrs W . Mc- \ icker, Greenpark, w"hen the monthly meeting of the Guild was held. There w as a large attendance of members, and the Rev. T. J. Wallis took the chair. The secretary reported that tho recent circuit social was a great success, and the financial results very satisfactory. Gifts for the jumble sale to be held in the Hibernian Hall. Christeliurch, were asked for. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mrs R. Macartney and family in their bereavement. Interesting letters were read from Mi ssionary Sisters in the Solomon Islands, thanking the members of the Ladies' Auxiliary for their gifts of clothing, home remedies, soaps, etc.. etc., all of which were very much needed, and very gratefully accepted. Mrs McLachlan expressed regret in losing Mrs K. A. Will iamson, one of the members, from their midst, and, on behalf of the Guild, wisheid her every success and God-speed in the new district, to which she was removing. Mr Wallis spoke in a similar strain, mentioning" that the Greenpark Church was losing one of its most regular and active members. Mrs Williamson briefly replied. thanking the Guild members and Mr Wallis for their good wishes. During the afternoon solos were given by Mrs Christian and Mrs McLachlan. Afterwards Mr J. Gilmour explained the aims and objects of the forthcoming bazaar, and invited all church members to contribute towards the success of this function. WADDINGTON. At the anniversary services of the Sheffield Presbyterian Church, the preacher was the Rev. Brian Ivilroy, of Riccarton. In spite of the inclement weather, the services were very well attended. The anniversary celebrations were continued in the form of a concert held in the Sheffield Hall. There was a large and appreciative audience. Instrumental items were contributed by Mrs Bates, Misses Valmai and Yvonne Livingstone and Messrs IlicksUssher, D. Livingstone, and F. Bull, junior. Yocal items and recitations were given by Miss Merle Miller (Lyttelton), Mrs Withers, Misses Bates, Brewins, Elvn, Stephens, and Muriel Harris, and Messrs Hicks-TJssher, and Stephens. Highland dancing was given by Miss Audrey Stephens. During the course of the evening, addresses were delivered by the Revs. Bates (Sheffield), Boothroyd (Waddington), and Kilroy (Riccarton). An apology was received from the Rev. Sparrow. At their residence, "Parenga," Sheffield, Mr and Mrs A. W. Adams gave a very pleasant evening for the young people of the Waddington Methodist Church. Games and competitions were indulged in, the winners of the competitions being Misses W. Clark, Hazel Everett, and Elva Stephens; and Messrs C. D. Sealey, and Voice. Musical items we're given by Messrs W, Hicks-Ussher and Voice,- and recitations by Misses Pearce aud C'. E. Sealey and Mr Douglas Sealey. A very dainty supper was partaken of. Gray don, Douglas Sealey, and Charlie Earnshaw. LEESTON. The following were present at the last monthly meeting of the Leeston Town Board: Commissioners R.. J. McConnell, F. Townshend, S- Johnston, W". Johnston and Dr. B. Volckman. Mr F. B. "Woodard sent a receipt received for a payment he had made for asphalting done to the footpath on. his Lake road frontage. He asked the Board to bear a share of the cost. A commissioner said he understood that the practice followed in the past was for tho Board to bear the cost of a. three or four feet strip on tho outside of the footpath, and for the property owner to pay for the extra width if he required the whole of the footpath asphalted. It was decided to reply that the Boai;d could not see its way to givo any assistance. It was reported that the Fire Brigade ladders had been removed from the engine-house by soma unauthorised person. The clerk was instructed to report the matter to tho twiice if the ladders were not returned forthwith. Commissioner S. Johnston brought under notice the flooding from the creek running through the township. Ho thought tho position would be improved by the straightening of the creek from the point where it entered the town boundary. Still further improvement couild be effected by a little widening up and bar-king up in other places lower down. Although no definite arrangement was come to regarding measures to obviate trouble from overflow in the-future, members are to inspect the creel* so as to be in. a position to deal with the matter should further trouble arise. It was considered unlikely that there would be more overflowing now that winter was over. Dog registration fees were fixed at 2s 6d for sheep and cattle dogs and 10.-! for all others. A young man named Potts, who is employed by Mr F. A. Wagner, is in. the Christchurch Hospital as a result of a road aocident. His motor-cycle collided with a motor-car on a Do vies ton road and he was thrown off, sufferiiig a broken leg.

HORNBY-ISLINGTON. The Hornby Rugby League Football Club hold a dance in aid of the Queen Carnival in the Islington Social Hall, on Thursday evening. The music was j supplied bv Mr Fred. Miss Gellatly, assistant mistress c:t the Southbrook Public School, who is leaving for Invercargill. was entertained in the Coronation Hall on Wed 1 - nesdav. The first part of the evening was devoted to progressive euchre, the winners being Miss Gellatly and Master Alexander Drage. Mr N. Archer, chairman of the Vla 11 Committee, spoke of Miss Gellatly's many good qualities as a teacher and a helper at social functions. On behalf of the residents he presented her with a crystal salad bowl and vase, at the same time wishing her every happiness in her southern Jiome. Miss Gellatly suitably acknowledged the gifts. Dancing was then commenced, Mr and Mrs S. B. Quaife, of Springston, providing the music. Extras were played by Mrs Meyers, F. Meyer;., and J. Dawson. Mr and Mrs E. B. Stanton gave a party to Miss Gellatly, about twenty being present. Progressive euchre was played. The prizes were won by Miss Scott and Mr C. A. Laskey. Songs were contributed by Misses Gellatly. F. Stanton, N. Bell, and Mr ('. W. Bell. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mr and Mrs G. Mcintosh.
