SPORTING.

TURF GOSSIP. Nominations for the Marton Jockey Club's Spring Meeting, and the Manawatu Hunt Steeplechase Meeting close on Friday.

The first nice at Riccarton to-day starts at 11.31 a.m.

A. D. Webster arrived at Riccarton on Sunday with Bonecto.

Manv Colours is to take his place in the Trial Hurdle Race field instead of the Jumpers' Flat Race. A. McDonald will ride' Sir Roseberry and Uuele Dave in tlieir engagements at Riccarton to-day. Boomcrday was worked'at Ritcnrton yesterday, and appears to have made a really good recovery from his recent accident.

The Hawkc's Bay sportsmen, Messrs W. H. Gaisford, P. F. Wall, and H. R. Peacock, were present at Riccarton yesterday to see tlieir horses in action before the Grand National Meeting. Milda, dam of Milda Pointer, has foaled a'chestnut fslly to. Rev do Oro. Th" voungster. who is a natural pacer, is owned bv Mr A. C. Watson.-of Te-iiic.k-.'i. and is the first foal of the season.

Both Serene and White Comet again showed their liking for soft tracks when working at Riccarton yesterday morning. The best that Riccarton stables can produce will have a hard job to bead these two visitors in the Winter Cup.

Anticipate, the five-year-old brother to Marqucteur and Mark' Time, is still eligible for hack company, and his running in tliG Winter Cup to-day will show whether he is likely to race himself into open company early this season.

Warhaven is an unlikely starter in tho Winter Cup. * So far, no horseman has been engaged for him in that race. The Kilbroney. gelding is inclined to be thick-winded, and tho weather conditions during the past wttfk have been altogether against him getting a strong enough preparation for a race over a mile.

The Auckland "£V;ar" says that Sir Archie continues to impress by his work at Ellerslie, and if he retains his present condition should do well in spring engagements. He has only started once, and that- was when he won the first division of the Jervios Handican at tho Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting. The following nominations have been received for officers of the Ashburton Trotting Club:—President, Mr H. F. Nieoll; vice-presidents, Messrs F. B. Robilliard and W. Bryant; stewards, Messrs J. T. Thomas, A. J. Millichamp, S. Madden, J. Smith, A. J. Nieoll, and F. W. Seldon; committee, Messrs A, J. Nieoll, J. Smith, and F. W. Seldon.

The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's August Meeting will, as( announced yesterday, be held to-mor-row and on. Friday and Monday. After yesterday's sunshine the prospects look much brighter, and with fine weather* to-day, the track should he in good order for the opening of the meeting to-morrow. The first race will start at ]L,a.m.
