During Grand National -week 110 matches will be played by members of the Christchurch Ladies' Club or the Hagley Ladies' Club.

The Christclmrch Ladies' Golf Club ■will play a senior and junior Canadian foursome knock-out match at Shirley, beginning on Tuesday, August 18th. Entries will close with the secretary on Monday, August 17th, at 4 p.m.

Members of tho Kaiapoi Ladies' Golf Club played a match with the Hagley Ladies' Club last Thursday afternoon at Hagley. Tho weather conditions were perfect, and some interesting games were played, Hagley proving victorious.

11. R. Blair, the genial professional at Sliirlev, is getting in some practice, and many local golfers expect him to finish well up in tho open. He has been getting scores from 72 to 74 quite regularlv of late.

In very adverse weather conditions the Tuson Cup, the team match between tho Wellington Golf Club and the Christchurch Golf Club, which is played onco each year on tho course of each club, and because of the length of time over which it has been contested and the associations which have been formed in those contests, is looked upon with greater interest, by the Christchurch Club at least, as the most important inter-club match of tho year, •was played at, on Saturday. Not only was the weather as bad as possible, but tho course was absolutely water-logged, and the visitors, after a hard trip iu the ferry the night before, were heroic, to say the least, to play tho match. .

On the whole, tho standard of golf produced was surprisingly good, and while the Christchurch players won by a fairly big margin, many of the contests were very close, and .all of them 'interesting. . The four-ball matches, played in the morning, all resulted in favour of the local players, as follows:

"WELLINGTON. CHKISTCHUKCH. E. H. Macfarlane A. D. S. Duncan and H. W. Macand J. Duncan 0 farlance 1 J. B. Parker and It. A. Wilson and K. Duncan .. 0 M. Macbetk .. 1 E. O. Hales and C. A. Seymour 0. J. Wilson 0 and A. L. Cropp 1 A. D. Morris and C. R. J. Waid and H. P. Bliiridell 0 \V. P. Anderson X

Tho singles in the afternoon resulted in six wins for the local players to two for the visitors. These matches resulted:—

Total ... 2 Total .. 10 t Later in the afternoon, when the participants Lad got into warmer and dryer apparel, Mr A. D. S. Duncan, for the Wellington Club, handed the trophy, the Tuson Cup, to Afr A. L. Cropp, captain of the local team, who responded appropriately. Ho expressed regret, felt kennly by all, that the weather conditions had made the visit so unpleasant.

The veterans played their four-ball matches in the morning, and this match being only a friendly one, the afternoon matches were abandoned. Tho local veterans won three of the four matches, and halved the other, but two Christchurch players played for Wellington as the team was two short. The individual results were:—

"It would be a good thing for golfers to revert to the principle of taking tho ball clearly from the turf with the iron club. Those advanced players who strive constantly for perfection of control and back-spin would find it sufficient merely to graze the ground from just below tho ball to a spot a few inches in front of where it had lain in striking this downward blow, instead of digging the blade into the ground. Mr Harold Hilton Bays that he tried it again the other day and found it satisfactory. And the new way is a serious matter so far as concerns the upkeep of courses."—Harry Vardon.

At Hagley on Saturday, in drenching rain, the second rounds of the club championship and junior championship were played, resulting as follows:

' Club Championship. Iv. T. Tosswill won by default from G. van Asch. F. S. Grant beat W. A. Purdie G and 5. V. 11. Freeth won bv default from M. A. H. Fell. P. C. Harris beat C l . S. Penlington 4 and 3. • Junior -Championship.

.1. H. .Schroder beat T. W. Keese 1 up. D. Appleby beat E. H. Clark 2 and 1. W. M. Tyers beat C. H. White 6 and 4. "T. W. ' Lewis beat P. C. Fcnwick G and 5.

(Continued at foot of next column.)

. A bogey match wil bo played next Saturday as well as tho semi-finals in the championships. Tho draw in the club championship is: R. T. Tosswill plays P. ,8. Grant, and P. C. Harris plays V. H. Freeth, In the junior championship J. 11. Schroder plays D. Appleby, and T. W. Lewis plays ,W. M. Tyers. During next week-end a team will go to Harewood for an interclub match.

Mr Ross Gore, who for many years past has been the secretary of the Rose Bay Golf Club, Sydney, has had the misfortune to lose his left arm. He developed a diseased bone in the upper part of his left arm, and the only remedy to prevent tho trouble spreading was amputation of the entire limb. The great esteem in which Mr Gore is held by the golfing community of Sydney was evidenced a few days ago, when he was presented with a purse of a thousand sovereigns, and given seven months' leave of absence in order to visit England. Mr Gore was to have left Sydnoy last week, but owing to his health not being sufficiently restored tho trip has been postponed. He is a member of a well-known Wellington family.

Despite tho cold rain and the very wet, course at Shirley on Saturday, a very fair-sized gallery, many of them ladies, followed the Tuson Cup players. The scoring could not be expected to be low, yet many good shots were played and good scores at holes secured. The best ball of the match between Arthur Duncan and Ewen Macfarlane, for the first nino holes, for instance, was 2 over 4's, and when the wet, slippery grips on the clubs, and tho bad lies and wet soggy stances are taken into consideration, some of the play was truly remarkable for its excellence.

Owing to the failure of many plaver3 at Shirley to replace turf more quickly between shots, and to observe tho etiquette of tho game, and in tho hope of better preserving tho turf for the championship, the committee has decided to appoint, a number of the members to act as stewards. These will be asked to report to the committee anyone they see failing to replace turf, loitering between shots, failing to call following players through when they should, etc., etc. This is something that should have received the attention of the committee before, and will have the approval of a large majority of the members.'

ASHBURTON CLUB. The second round of the Ashburton Golf Club's senior and junior championships was played on Saturday afternoon in wet weather. There were pools of water lying '_about tho course. A handicap match for non-competitors in the second round of the championships was also held. Results:— SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS. Smith beat Pinfold. Pigou beat Ambrose. Russell beat Prarr. Boddingtou beat Sinclair. .TUNIOIi CHAMPIONSHIP. McGregor beat McDonald. Featherston beat Orr. Bunlop beat McSherry. Laing beat North. Hurnie beat Fraser. ilunro beat Dunn.
