PRIMARY INDUSTRIES.

; EXPANDING OUTPUT; - To show that the Dominion's exports ire on a sound footing so far as quantity is concerned, the Acting-Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nosworthy) quote some significant new figures in the course of! his speech at the end of the Budget debate. The Minister cited a remark made in the debate by the member for Wanganui (Mr W. A. Veitch) to the effect that the export situation, last year was saved only by high prices, and that the quantities of wool, lamb, and mutton sent out of the country were less than those of the preceding year. This, said Mr Nosworthy, was disproved by figures ■which he had got out in the past few days. He would take wool first. The export figures showed a slight decrease, but that might be accounted for by the quantity withheld from the :last sales. .The quantity shorn during the past three years showed a continuous increase. The returns were:— Lbs. 1921-22 .. 155,847,225 1922-23 .. 157,587,976 1923-24 .. 159,619,361 Figures for last year were not available, but tho number of sheep in the Dominion Bhowed'an increase over the previous ,/ear of 226,926, and doubtless the quantity of wool shorn was correspondingly greater. Eegarding beef, lamb, and mutton, Mr Veitch had quoted export figures, but had not taken the carry-over into account. The return of animals slaughtered showed increases of 77,194 in cattle and 580,257 in sheep. These moTc than made up for a decrease of 303,257 in lambs. Pigs-showecL an-increase of 31,390. As compared with the 1912 slaughter.those f6r 1924-25 showed the following increases:— Cattle 244,689 Sheep .. i. 47,712 'Lambs £.)' ''1^417,387 ' Pigs 115,367 \ The previous year he had shown that dairy exports had since 1912 become fonr times as great in value arid three times as great in quantity. Tho figures of weight for the past two years were: 1923-24. 1924-25. Cwt. Cwt. Butter .... 1,186,278 1,238,370 Cheese ... 1,485,170 1,386,363 On a butter-fat basis the two combined showed an increase for last year of 605,6181b. The figures for tho dairying year ended on July 31st last Bhowed an increase of 7 per cent, in terms of total butter-fat graded.
