.; Harbour Light Theatre. . There was 8 well-Ailed house at the Hiirbour Light Theatre on Saturday evening ■when " The Spider and' the. Rose," starring Alice Lake, -was Bcreened, together, with -a Mabel Nortrand comedy, a Monte Banks comedy,' and a gazette. An additional attraction •\vas the ■' appearance of Miss. Myrtle Hook, contralto, in two songs, and. Mr Robert Allison. baritone. The .Rongs of both-were well received, ;Mr Allison's rendering of his. recall number, "Ariije O- .Sun," being pairticulnrly fine. The picture .portion of the programme will be repeated' to-night. Tomorrow "This Freedom,'.' frbm the novel- by A. S.. M. Hutchinson,' and featuring ■ Pay Compton; will be''screened. The • sttppoitang programme' includes a cartoon. Urban Chat, and the third episode of . the serial "Tho Fast Steppers."

Inquest. ■> Mr Wyvern Wilson, Coroner, opened an inquest on Saturday morning on* the body o£ the man who .was killed by being run over by an engine and van on the ferry wharf cn Friday evening. Frederick Roberton, shunter, said that at the time of the mishap it was raining very hard and the. Port was in darkness owing to the failure of the electric liglit. About sir o'clock a "K" waggon was being pushed on to the wharf by a light engine, on the set of rails alongside the ferry platform. Witness was riding on the front of the engine, and the assistant shunter on the waggon. He heard the fireman call to the driver to stop, and the engine and 1 van stopped within a couple of yards. Witness had felt nothing unusual, but the fireman said he had.felt a bump. They searched and found the body of a man under the ledge of the platform, . with • the head- on the- rail. The engine had a bright light, but it was partly obscured ..by the waggon.' Witness'was in his place on the engine, as : he was in 1 charge of the shunt. A lady, a passenger byi the leiTy steamer, had told witness that she liad seen a man fall off the platform previously. Constable A. A. Baines described the position in* which he found the body. It was badly mutilated. The inquest was adjourned to Christchurch, sine die. <

Saturday evening, active and honorary members r gathered to honour Lieutenant F. Walklin, who recently resigned from tho Brigade after 21 years service. Superintendent W. G.'Catson -presided, and the Mayor (Mr F. E. Sutton) and several .Councillors were present.- The earlier , part-of the evening was spent, in a cards .match, active v. honorary members. • After, supper had been partaken of Superintendent Carson said that members of thp Brigade had felt: that they could not let Lieutenant Walklin go without making some recognition of his good work in the Brigade during the past ,21 years. He . asked the Mayor to make a presentation from the Brigade .to Lieutenant Walklin, in appreciation of his services. """
