EXCHANGE OF CRUISERS.
H.M.A.S. BRISBANE INCHINESE WATERS. (bt cable—press association—copyright.) (australian and n.j. cable association.) MELBOURNE, July 9. In tho House of Representatives the Mr Stanley Bruce, replying to a question regarding the warship Brisbane, in Chinese waters, said that in communications with the British Government the principle of exchange, as it affected the Brisbane, was clearly donned.
He reiterated that tho exchange cruiser was under tho command of the admiral in charge of the station to which the cruiser was attached. Tho admiral had authority to uso the exchange cruiser in the same way as he would use vessels belonging to his own squadron. That authority extended to the necessity lor safeguarding the lives and property of British eubjects. If any further action were contemplated tho admiral had to obtain authority from the British or Australian Government as the case may be. The Ministry had not taken steps to recall the Brisbane.
