AN INSCRIPTION.

THE MEMORIAL GATES AT LANCASTER PARK. AN IMPASSE BEACHED.

Difficulty in respect of the wording of the inscription to bo placed on a plate on the Memorial Gates at Lancaster Park caused a discussion at last night's meeting of the Lancaster Park Board of Control. Tlio Commercial Travellers' Warehousemen s Association had rejecfeu, as unsuitable, the following inscription, which, at the request of the Board, had been drawn up by Messrs F. Wilding, K. 0., and Mr H. H. Wauchop. lhis inscription read as follows:"Through tho efforts of the Canterbury Cricket Association, the Canterbury Rugby Football binon, and the Canterbury Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen's Association, this mound was freed from debt and dedicated for all time to amateur sport." The Commercial Travellers' submitted an inscription which read as i'ol"To commemorate tho efforts of the Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Associat.on, whereby the sum of £12,- ; 04 15s 2d was raised to preserve this Park tor amateur sport -i* h memorial to the athletes who 101 l in tho Great War, 1914-1918." Tho .subject had been discussed on a previous occasion by the Board and was resumed last night. Mr H. H. YVauvhop produced the inscription prepared by Mr P. Wildin<r K.C., and himself which the Commoruial Travellers' Association found not acceptable. , In reply to a question, Mr \Yauchop said the Commercial Travellers objected to the first inscription because they considered the Commercial Travellers Association had saved the park, and no one else. Mr C. P. moved + he adoption of the wording as approved by the Commercial Travellers. Mr Wauchop seconded. Mr W. H. Winsor moved' tho adoj>•tion of the wording as drafted by Messrs Wilding ana Wauchop. Mr ft. B. Ward seconded. Mr W. Simpson susgostod that representatives of the Board and of the Association should endeavour to com© to an agreement on the subject. Mr Wauchop said that he was taking up tho attitude taken by the Association. . . Mr Agar said that tho Association had been promised a plate on the gates to commemorate its efforts Mr Winsor said that unfortunately the Commercial Travellers' wording did not state tho wholo of tho truth. On consulting the minutes, it was found that thoy stated that the platewas. to 1)0 got for "the body that saved the park.'' It was admitted that there wan no doubt as to tho "body" referred to. The amendment was legatived. An amendment proposed by Mr Pimpson, suggesting that an alteration of the wording of the Commercial Travellers' inscription, by inserting a statement that the Association had saved tho park for the Cricket Association and. for the Rugby Union wid amateur sport, should be submitted to the Commercial Travellers for their consideration and that a deputation from tho Board should wait on the Commercial Travellers oh the subject. Mr Wauchoo said that the representatives of the Board would be xti for a warm time if they attempted to convince tho Commercial Wellers Sat anv other body hut the Commercial Travellers h*d saved the pork. The amendment was also lost. The motion—the inscription proposed by the Commercial Travellerswas defeated by 4 votes to 3.
