—«— ASHBURTON. GENERAL NEWS. On account of there being only one defended ei.vrl and two police cases set down for hearing at the Magistrate's Court to-day, the sitting should be a short one.

There was a large crowd of ladies on the Ashburton golf links yesterday when a foursome match was played, the winners being Miss I. Digby and Mrs H. Fraser. There was auatteudam-e of 40 members at the last fortnightly meeting of the Hakatore Lodge. No. £3, 1.0.0. F. The retiring X.G., Ero. A. Meaclem, presided. The tinancial secretary, Bro. G. Technical School Board. The Ashburton Technical School Board met yesterday afternoon. Present: Messrs C. Beid (chairman), T. Hayes, J. Watson, J. Cow, E. Galbraith, G. W. Andrews, B. Houston.

The financial statement showed a credit balance of £B3B 10s 3d.

The Director (Mr E. J. Thompson) in his report stated that an evening woolclassing class would commence on Friday.- Preparations were being made b}- both instructors and students for a campaign to raise funds for the school swimming pool, the work for which was being done' by Messrs Crum Bros. Mr J. Watson and the Director were appointed to represent tho Board at tho conference to be held at Wellington next month. The Director of Education wrote asking if the Board approved of the system of requesting the pupils to supply a certificate to say that they had not been in contact with infectious or contagious diseases, which was adopted at Christ's College. The letter asked if the Board would approve, of a similar system being introduced into secondary schools.

It was agreed that no action such as that suggested was necessary in secondary schools. Miss F. Maxwell, a member of the teaching staff, who has been indisposed for some time, was granted leave of absence until September Ist.

The chairman stated that it was now too late in the year to consider the installation of the proposed heating system, but an elaborate system would be installed before next winter. The chairman, Mr Hayes, and the Director, were appointed a committeeto make any arrangements in connexion with the visit of the students to the American Fleet.

It was decided to ask the Education Department for a grant for altering the plumbers' shop to provide > for a new classroom, and for alterations to the playground.

Dunedin Exhibition. Arrangements in connexion with the Ashburton display in the Canterbury Court at the Dunedin Exhibition were discussed at a meeting of the Ashburton executive, held on Wednesday night, and over which the chairman (Mr K. Galbraith) presided. Mr W B. Thomas was appointed secretary. Tho Canterbury Provincial Committee advised that the Christchurch City Council had authorised a grant of £1033 for the establishment of the Court The exhibits of minerals was left with the Ashburton Committee. Messrs J. D. Hall (Christchurch), F. W Seldon (Ashburton), and J. RAKAIA. A meeting in the interests of the social and rescue work of the Salvation Army was held in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church on Wednesday evening. There was a good attendance. Commandant Schroeder gave an interesting account of the work of the Salvation Army during the last thirty years. A collection was taken up in aid of the social funds.

The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Rakaia Lodge, 1.0.0.F.M.U., was held in St. Mark's Schoolroom, Bro. A. B. McLauchlan, N.G., presiding over a good attendance of members. It was decided to endeavour to put the matngement funds on a better footing. The White Degree was conferred on six brothers who had qualified for it. The lec-ture was given by P.D.G.M., Bro. Biker. The permanent secretary offered a. prize to the member proposing the highest number of accepted candidates during the next six months. One brother was reported to be on the sick funds.

There was a very large attendance at the Rakaia Football Club's weekly card party, held on Wednesday evening. The prijses were won by Messrs Hartigan and Holmes, and Misses V. Fox and I. Smith.

STAVELEY. At the meeting of the Loyal "Pioneer Lodge, M.L'., 1.0.0. F., the N.G. presided over a fair attendance. Two brethren were declared on the sick funds. A degree lecture was held and two brethren received the White and Blue Degree. The social committee has made arrangements for & card match, Oddfellows versus all-comers, for to-morrow evening in the hail.

The wet weather continues. Considerable rain fell on Tuesday and 2. little on Wednesday. The ground is so fully soaked that what fell on fneso days ran straight into the rivers and stormwater channels, all of which are more 04 less flooded again. The roads in the vicinity are in a rough state, having suffered a. good deal with the wash of storm water. On several occasions lately the rural mailman had to get the assistance of a horse to pull his car through flooded channels.
