KAIKOURA. Messrs R. T. Pope- and G. D.Smith, secretary aiid chairman respectively of the Kai'koura, "Dairy Company, returned to Kaikoura. on Wednesday, after attending the Dairy Conference in Palmerston North.

Dr. G. I. Miller left on Wednesday for Dunedin, where he will spend a holiday, prior to proceeding to tho Old Country. A temporary approach is being put in at Hapuku, pending a decision as to what work shall bo ■ undertaken by the Highwavs Board and County Council. Tt is likely that extra spans will be added to tlie bridge, as being the only means of ensuring a permanent structure. It is confidently expected that tho Clarence bridge will be completed by tho end of August, notwithstanding the delay caused by the recent wet weather.

ROTHERHAM. The Literary and Debating Society held its postponed .fortnightly, meeting in the hall on Tuesday night. Mr G. Popplewell occupied the chair. ' The subject was -"Married Life v. Single Life," which brought forth some very aood speeches, most of the speakers treating tho subject from the humorous side. Mr W. Hampton jun led the single argument, and Mrs O. 1. CHEVIOT. There was a very large and representative attendance of ladies at the meeting convened for the purpose of considering the formation of a branch of the Plunket Society in the district. Mrs Acton Adams, president of the Waipara ■ branch of the Society, attended, and gave a very interesting and instructive address on tho aims and objects of the Plunket Society. Pilkingtnn Correspondence was received from the Kdncation Board stating that the dual desks would he Mipplied as soon as possible. Reports on the cost of installing electric heaters and lights were submitted to the committee. Tt was decided, owing to the ex"es*ive cost, to abandon the proposal. It was agreed to approach the County Council for shingle for use in the school grounds. Permission was granted to the members of the Church of England to use the school for religion? service on Sundays until other arrangements are made. Messrs W. Waugh and S. Marsh were appointed delegates to the School Committees' Association. The euchre evenings arranged for the purpose of raisinj funds to provide prizes for the school children continue to be well patronised, and some very enjoyable evenings are spent. Last week's function was, on-account of the unfavourable. weather, postponed. Recent winners were Mrs Chisnall, Miss Cox, and Messrs C. Dkoy and J. Sclrjmanski. Teams from, tho Ourrhia school visited Marshland to try conclusions with the local scholars, with a result that the Ouruhia girls were defcted at Irnsket ball by 14 to 2, . whilst the Ouruhia. boys defeated Marshland at football by 5 to nil.

TEMPLETON. A social in connexion with the Wesley Guild was hold in tho Methodist Church last Wednesday evening. Prepared speeches were given by Mr J. Wilson. Miss <C. Kempthornc, and Mr Allot, Mr J. Wilson receiving first prize. A Tote of thanks was passed to Mr Blakelcy for judging the papers, after which enjoyable items were given by Miss Voice, Mr Allot, and Mr and Mrs McMillan. A pleasant evening was brought to a close by a dainty supper provided by the ladies.

HORNBY-ISLINGTON. .A dance in aid of the Hornby Rugby League .fifth grade team was hold in lho Orange- Hall, Hornby, on Tuesday. The haili, which was prettily decorated with the club's colours, was_ well filled with dancers. KIRWEE. A meeting of ex-pupils of the Kirwee School was held on- Tuesday, /when it was decided to invite Miss C. Sloan to attend a social which will be held in r.bout a. fortnight's time. The expupils had intended joining in with the residents at a social which was held recently, but owing to the inclemency of the weather and the uncertainty as to whether the function would be held, they decided to hold a social at a later date. The following committee was. appointed to carry out the- necessary arrangements:—Mr W. Frizzell (chairman), Misses I>. Rout. IX Anderson, K. Anderson, and Messrs A. Williams, R. G. Bedford, A. G. Hart, M. Hoskings, J. Heseltine and G. Rout, with power to add. Miss D. Rout was elected secretary. It was decided to accept the offer of Mr Smith (Christchurch) to supply the music. The fortnightly meeting of the Kirwee Amusement Club was held on Tuesday. The first prizes for the progressive euchre match were won bv Mrs S. Dunn and Mr J.
