The engagement is announced of Nancy M. Robison, only daughter of Mr and Mrs H. S. Robison, Bank of New South Wales, Nelson, to Roger A. Hunt, of the Eastern Extension Australasia and China Telegraph Co., third son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Hunt, "Ruma-Mera" Nelson. The Mayoress, Mrs J. K. Archer, has consented to act as one of the judges of the fancy costumes, at the children's plain and fancy dress ball, to he held in Dixieland on Friday night. Handsome prizes will be awarded to the. bestdressed boy and girl, the most originally dressed boy and girl, and the most effective crepe paper dress.

The Wentvvortli Cabaret Club's usual weekly dance will be held on Saturday, July 11th, at the Winter Garden. Bailey's and Large's Jazz Bands will supply the music. A speeiaj attraction will be a Spanish tango, in costume, by Miss Arline Power and Mr Leo Coffey. The Wembley Club, whose fortnightly dances have become so popular,, are holding a special carnival dance next Monday night at St. Mary VMcmorial Hall, Manchester street. A concert party organised by Miss Bell and Mrs J. C. Holmes, visited the Coronation Hospital on Saturday night and entertained the patients. Items were contributed . by Misses Jessie Ewart and Clara Bowden, Archdeacon Taylor, and Messrs W. Richards, £. Armstrong, "Woodward, Madden, and G. Naylor. The motor-cars were lent by Messrs S. The tourney will 'be held at the Caledonian Hall. The "Good Luck" Jazz Assembly will hold a dance in Dixieland to-morrow evening. Miss Margaret S. Fitzgerald, M.Sc., of Canterbury College, who has been, appointed assistant teacher at lona College", Hastings, and will have under her control the teaching qf home science and dressmaking, graduated M.Sc. in 1924 with first-class honours in Botany. Last year she was awarded the Charles Cook Scholarship for research, and has been making observations on the animals and plants in the fresh water I streams and ponds around Christchurch, with a view to ascertaining the possible effect of airy pollution. She has also I carried out researches on the growth rings in New Zealand forest trees for the State Forest Service. About two years ago she greatly assisted in the I formation of the Canterbury College i Scientific Society and has continued an active member. A farewell luncheon to Miss Fitzgerald was given by members of the Scientific Society and* other students and members of the staff of Canterbury College, at Ballantyne's. Dr. C.. Chilton, Rector of the College, and Dr. C Coleridge Parr, president; of the* Scientific ■Society, referred in complimentary terms to Miss Fitzgerald's career at the college, and on behalf of those present wished her continued success in her new surroundings. At the jEolian Club's concert on Monday night Mozart's Sonata for violin and piano was delightfully played bv Misses Judith Mathias and Betty Haiinam. They also played, with expression and refinement, Hurlstone's ''Romance." both selections being much appreciated by the large audience. Mr and Mrs Kettle entertained a number of their friends at a most enjoyable card party, at their residence, "Awahuri," Papanui. Amongst those present were:—Mr and Mrs A. The winners of the card prizes were:—Ladies. Mrs Jas. Hoffman; gentlemen, Mr Jas. Hoffman. The consolation' prizes 'were won by Miss Maud Kettle and Mr Spiers. At the conclusion of cards, a dainty supper was, served, after which musical and elocutionary items were rendered bv Mrs S. Kruse, Mr IS. Hall, Mr Maiden, and Mrs S. Hall, whilst the accompaniments were played by Mesdames Thomas and Ives. The floral decorations were most artistic. A delightful evening was brought to a close by the singing ■of "Auld Lang Syne."

The Swannanoa Anglican Guild held a very successful "coin" afternoon for S. Ann's Home ton Monday last. Mrs H. M. Burgin lent her home "Crosby," for the occasion. About 30 ladies were present. Mrs C. A. Fraer, president of the Christchurch Branch of the National Council of Women, gave a most interesting address on her recent trip to America, where she was one of the New Zealand delegates to the International Women's Conference. Her address made a deep impression, and was heartily applauded. Mrs Fraer lived in the district some years ago, and many, were delighted to renew acquaintance with her. Miss R..Petrie contributed songs and Miss L. White pianoforte solos, which added to the enjoyment of the function. Amongst those present were: Mesdames H. M. Burgin, C. A. Fraer, Petrie, D. Chapman, I. and W. Winter, White, Searle, Page, Paget, Cole, Whitte, the Misses H. "Horrell, Findlay, Petrie, Winter (4), Paget, Whitte, White.

WOMEN'S WORK. Under the auspices of tho Mothers' Union, Mrs C. A. Fraer yesterday afternoon addressed a large gathering of women, in St. John's schoolroom. Mrs E.' W. Roberts presided. After outlining the work of the -National Council, Mrs Fraer went on to speak of her impressions of women's work at the big conference recently held in Washington. For the first time on record, a delegate was present-from New Zealand, and in all forty-two countries were, represented, including China. There were twenty delegates from Norway, all their expenses being paid by the Norwegian Government. They were all alert keen women, particularly wellinformed of ail subjects pertaining to women's welfare, much ' more so ; than those.of some'of'the other' Continental delegates. The speaker was impressed by the number of fine capable women present, who seemed to' have the world's good at heart; the keynote of the proceedings being lovg and sympathy. The official languages spoken were English, French and German, all others having to be translated. Mrs Fraer next spoke of the "Big Brother and Big Sister" movement; after.which a hearty vote of thanks was proposed by Mrs A. Morton, and carried by acclamation. Afternoon tea, which was much appreciated, was served by the Phillipstown branch of tha Mother's I Union.

CANTERBURY. WOMEN'S CLUB. At the Canterbury Women's Club on Monday afternoon, a reception was held to welcome new members elected on the last two ballots. In the absence of Mrs Holland, w ho har been indisposed for the last fortnight,. Miss Stoddart received the guests, and in a short speech welcomed them to the club. A short programme of music, contributed by Mrs, W. F. Tait, Mrs H. L Bowker, Mrs Nelson Wright, Mrs/Andrews; and Miss Evelyn Boot, was much enjoyed, and afternoon tea followed.
