KING'S BIRTHDAY. (asxcui. TO "rax raxss.") GREYMOUTH, June 3. The holiday was strictly observed, and flags were flying on many buildings in Grevmouth, while the vessels in port also displayed bunting. Cobden Memorial Bridge. Between 400 and 500 people attended the opening ceremony in connexion with the Cobden war memorial bridge. This is a handsome structure in reinforced concrete, with three pillars with inset tablets, upon two of which .are inscribed the names of 39 ex-soldiers who saw service at the front. The third contains the names of four who made the supreme sacrifice. The pupils of the Greymouth and .Cobden Schools marched in procession to the bridge, headed bv a pipe band.- The Greymouth Municipal Band was also in attendance, and led the singing. Mr A. G. Guun, chairman of the Cobden Town Board, delivered an address, recalling the sacrifu'es made in the Great War, and dealing with the district's effort in raising a fund to erect a suitable memorial. The Rev. J. F. Martin, representative of the Ministers' Association, ami Mr A. H. McKane, chairman of the Greymouth branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, also addressed those present. Kipling's "Recessional" was then sung, and Mr Joseph Taylor performed the unveiling ceremony. After the band had plav'ed "The Dead March" and "The Last Post" had been sounded, Mr Taylor formally handed over the Bridge of Remembrance to the representative of the Town Board, Mr Gunn. The singing of the National Anthem concluded the ceremony. Easterly Gale. Windows were broken, fences and trees blown over, and other damage was done during the night and to-day by an easterly gale. Prohibition Convention. A conventiou of the subarea of the New Zealand Alliance was held to-day at Greymouth, delegates being present from Reefton, Hokitika, Kumara, and Otira. The Rev. J. F. Martin presided, and Mr J. I. Royds, Dominion president, was also in attendance. The area organisers rendered their reports and gave particulars of the results of the silent voter campaign. There was a general discussion on the : progress of the campaign. At the afternoon session, Mr Royds delivered an address on the Dominion organisation, and the delegates present discussed the coming licensing poll from the national standpoint. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Rev. J. F. Martin; vico-president, Rev. J. F. Jack; secretary and treasurer, Mr Mason; executive, Messrs J. Watson (Reefton), B. Dixon (Greymouth), Rev. T. N. .Cuttle and Ensign A. J. Toomer. • Fire. At 7.10 to-night the Fire Brigade was culled out to a fire in a workshop "in Nelson street. Sparks from a gorse fire on the opposite side of the road ignited sotae of the weatherboards. The owner, Mr J. Tennent, succeeded in suppressing the blaze before, tho brigade'arrived. With the gale blowing, nothing could have saved his'residence if the flames had not been discovered in time. •' Golf.
