INCREASED WHEAT PRICES.
HON. MINISTER'S BEMAEKS. Commenting on the ratification by the Government of the negotiations between the Flour Millers' Association find the Wheat Growers, which resulted in the prices for next - year's ' wheat being fixed at: "Tuscans" 6s 5d per bushel,,"Hunters" 6s 7d per bushel and "Pearl" 6s 9d, the. Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. W. Nosworthy) stated: — "The Government's concurrence "was contingent on a sufficient "area being sown to provide approximately the Dominion's requirements. The. stipulated prices "are considered to.be sufficiently- '' remunerative "to encourage farm"ers to grow wheat." It is hoped and believed that farmers will make a. big effort to increase the wheat area, as another shortage in 1926 will be taken to mean that farmers will not or cannot grow wheat, and further assistance or consideration from either the Government or anybody else cannot then be expected. Dor several reasons it,is most desirable, that all wheat lands should be. Bown this year. Even a 30-bushel crop at the 1926* price of 6s od means a gross return of £9 12s 6d per acre. And a determined effort should be made to make New Zealand self-supporting for its most important foodstuffs. —6
