"Our schools arc suffering from too much book work—too many idle -words that mean nothing," declared Sir John Cockburn at the conference, at Brighton, of the Institute of Handicraft Teachers. Sir John, who is a former AgentGeneral for South Australia, added: "We hear a lot about the educational ladder; the ladder is a splendid thing if it leads us anywhere. But does our educational ladder perform its true function in fitting men and women for what they are going to do in real life! It does not yet fulfil its full function of preparing children in mind and body for the actual struggle of life."
