ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. The Hon. AY. Xosworthy passed through Ashburton ycstc-rday afternoon, en route for Dunedin. The chairman o£ the High School Board of Governors (Mr J. W. Bowden) left for Wellington last evening, where, with "air R. Bell, ho will interview the Minister of Education with regard to the Board's request for an increase in the grant of £560 towards extra accommodation at the school. Consternation reigned in East street shortly after 3 p.m. yesterday, when a horse and dray, owned by Mr Little, of Wakanui, took fright, through the back of the dray being struck by a passing motor-car. Tho animal, which is blind in one eye, was feeding from a nosebag ac the time, and on being disturbed jumped on to the footpath, breaking a verartdah post. The force of the impact further disturbed the horse, which careered across the street, galloping head-on into a taxi owned by Mr E. Brownsdon, which was on the taxi stand. The taxi was not extensively damaged, but the tyres on the two lefthand side wheels were- burst, whilo one of the front mudguards was dented and the front v-ind-screen cracked. On Saturday evening a meeting of the Ardamine Hall Committee was held in the hall. Mr 11. Harrison presided, over a good attendance. The secretary was instructed to have some repairs to the hall carried out at once. A request was received from St. Patrick's Church Committee for assistance in topping the trees round the church ground, tho firewood to be used at the hall. It was decided to agreo to the request. The matter of holding a hare shoot in aid of tho hall funds was discussed, and arrangements were left in the hands of the chairman and secretary, an early date to be fixed. At tho weekly shoot of the Doric Miniature Rifle' Club, the prize was a trophy presented by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company. Tho following tied, with total scores of 35: J. Baker (3), 34; J. Board (2), 33; J. Baxter (0), 27; D. Banks (2), 34; 8. Smith (3), 32; R. Shanks (2), 35; E. Kingsbury (4), 31. On the third shoot-off, S. Smith won with 32, 33, 34, and J. Baker took second place with 33, 33, 28. Other good scores were R. Harrison 33, D. Harrison 33, H. Harrison 32, and M. Kingsbury 32. Possible;! were registered in practice shoots by D. Banks and J. Grieve in aid of the school piano fund, was held in the schoolroom on Friday. Music was supplied by Chapman's Jazz Band, Messrs Wolfrey, Smith and Petrio playing extras. Step dances were given bv Miss Petrie, Miss Waddington, and Mr H. Smith. Mr Grieve was M.C. The ladies provided supper. I>uring tho evening Mr G. L. Bufton (chairman of the School Committee) took the opportunity of thanking Mr and Mrs Grieve for organising the dance and congratulated them on the success of their efforts. * STAVELEY. Football enthusiasts had their first opportunity this season of seeing a ■game plavted locally, when on Saturday a Mcthven team met a SpringburnMount iSomers team. The result was a win for tho local team bv 0 points to 3. The committee of the Athletic Club met at tho end of last week, the president (Mr John Sawers) being in the chair. .It was decided that-, owing to tho lateness of the season, the sports meeting, postponed from earlier in tho year on account of the epidemic, b© abandoned till December or January if a suitable day could be arranged, 'flie club's finances showed a. credit balance of £3O 3s. Arrangements are under way for tho club's first annual ball; MAYFIELD. Under tho auspices of the Presbyterian Bible Class, a rally was held in the church on Friday evening last, when Mr Percy McDowell introduced Miss Wilson, the travelling of tho P.8.C.M., who gave a very comprehensive survey of Bible Class work and study. Various games were indulged in and supper dispensed. "

METHVEN.

The Met liven and Highbank Cemetery Boards have been given annual grants of £lo and £5 respectively by the County Council. The balance-sheets forwarded to, the Council showed that the Methven Board had a credit of £lO 7s 8d and the Highbank Board a debit of lis Sd.

The meteorological observations taken at Mr James Carr-'s station. "Rudstou." Methven, for the month of May are as follows: —Rain fell on nine days, the maximum fall being on the Srd, when 101 points vere registered. The total rainfall for May, 1925, was 3.139 inches, and for May, 1924, 2.03 inches. The total for the period January to May 31st. 192u, was 13.96 inches, as compared with 14.72 inches for the corresponding peiiod in 1924. The vital statistics for May were:— Births 4, deaths nil, marriage 1. For May, 1924, the figures were: —Births o, deaths ], marriages nil. The annual general meeting of shareholders of the Methven Hall Company was presided over by Mr J. T. Mangin. The secretary read the annual report and balance-sheet. The report said that during the year a series of dances had been held for the purpose of securing extra funds for the improvements of the interior of the building. A sum of £2O 17s 9d had been raised by this means, but owing to lack of support by the public at the later functions they had been discontinued. The balance showed a credit of £lO4 Is Sd. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. It was decided to place the sum of £BO on fixed deposit. The question of making further improvements to tho hall interior at an estimated cost of £l7O was fully discussed, but the matter had to be held in abeyance till funds permit. It was considered that some improvement to the front of the building should be put in hand, and it was decided to lay down a, concrete path at the front entrance and along the side of the hall. The following were elected directors: — Messrs J. T. Mangin (chairman), Angus, McKay, P. G. Mangin, H. 11. Pawson, J. F. Stone, Win. Morgan, and Jas. Carr.

CHERTSEY. The Chertaey Card Club held a progressive eucliro tournament on Saturdaj' evening. There was a largo attendance, many being present from Pendarves and Seafield. The games were controlled by Mr F. Ironside. The ladies' section was won by Miss _ K. Hampton (Pendarves) with 141 points, Miss Muriel Garland being second with 124 points. The gentlemen's prizo was won by Master J. Cronin with 143 points, and the second prize by Mr John Lambie (Pendarves). After supper a. dance was held, the music being contributed by Misses Esther King, Nora Flinn, Ailsa Rankin, Clara McKee, and Mr Erie Rankin. The fortnightly meeting of the Chertsey Lodge, No 90, 1.0.0. F., was held in the Pendarves Hall on Thursday, Bro. J. Richardson, N.G., presiding. At the request of the Grandmaster. the Lodge was adjourned for two minutes out of respect to the late Prime Minister. Communications from the grand secretary were read and considered. It was decided that the election of officers be held at the next meeting. MOUNT SOMERS. The annual meeting of the Anglican Church at Mount Somers took place in the Parish Room. The vicar, the Eev. Paul Beresfortl, read his report. Ho referred to tho great step they had taken in at last building a church and Sunday school at Mayfield. He thanked the retiring officers for their faithful service during tho past year. The accounts, showing a good credit balance, were read by Mr Boalcr, and passed by the meeting. Tho following were elected as church officers for the ensuing year:—Mr J. A. Boalcr, vicar's warden; Mr Evans, people's warden; Mr G. Harrison, vestryman for Anama; Mr Ftemming, for Mount Somers; Mr G. L. Snndry and Mr Firman, for Mayfield; Mr Stuart Baxter, for Ruapuna; Mr Ted Burgess, for Stavelcy; Mr Eric Naumann, for Bushsidoj Mr Brathwayt, for. Alford Forest; Mr Harris, for Ashburton Forks. The Von. Archdeacon Taylor, who was present as the vicar's guest, concluded the meeting with the Blessing.
