Her Royal Highness Princess Louise Duchess of Argyll, who celebrated her birthday on March 17th, once unconsciously helped to make the fortune of a great novelist, whose birth centenary falls this year. When R. D. Blacfcmore's "Lorna Doone" was publ'shed in 1374, it at first attracted little notice, but the announcement was . made of the engagement of Princess Louise and the then Marquess of Lome. The muddle-headed public conceived an idea that the book had something to do with the Royal love-match, and the sales went up with a rush.
