Dr. Jeffreys discussed at the meeting of the Royal Astronomical Society, the question of how large the sun was at the time when the "collision" occurred which resulted in the birth of oar solar system. The sun was now burning away at the rate of nearly four million tons per second; and yet it was scarcely any smaller now than it w;:~ «rhen that catastrophe occurred sons and scons ago! So enormous is the weight of the sun that even at that rate of burning it had only lost in | that long period one-two thousandth part of its total weight:
