This 'is the first offer of the kind received from any Government. "I am pleased to tear that the leagues of the South Island are in the future going to work closer together," said the Hon. A. F. Some interesting statistics with regard to the value of a tourist traffic to a particular country was afforded to the delegates at the Conference of the South Island Progress Leagues at Invercargill by Mr H. J. fought, who was one of the delegates for the Canterbury Progress League. In the course of his remarks, Mr Knight mentioned that the tourist traffic was worth some £27,000,000 to the Hawaiian Islands, while before the war, France benefited to the extent of over £100,000,000 arid Switzerland to some £66,000,000. So beneficial was the traffic to Switzerland that the inhabitants there paid no taxes, all of which were provided out of the 'money spent in the country by the visiting tourists. New Zealand had many attractions which were not to be seen in any other part of the world, and while he did not expect the tourist traffic to be as beneficial to the Dominion as in l the countries he had mentioned, they could do a great deal to build up the prosperity of New Zealand by attracting tourists here from year to year by an active policy of propaganda.
