OVERSEAS SETTLEMENT.
1 NEW SCALE OF FARES. (FROM OTHI OWN COBMSPOHDENT.) LONDON, March 24
For some time past Mr F. T. Sandford (Migration Officer) has been in negotiation with the ! Overseas Settlement Committee, and to-day finality was reached in an agreement between the New Zealand' Government and the Imperial Government in relation to the cost of the passages for assisted settlers. The agreement is to come into force on, April 1, and will continue in operation for a period of three years. Concessions have been made by the Home authorities which will mean an extra expenditure on their part of £BSOO a year, if the number of migrants ivero the same as during last year. case of an increase of settlers the Overseas Settlement Committee will bear a proportionate increase of cost. Boys and girls between the ages pf 17 and 19, whether with parents or not, have hitherto had to pay a fare of £5 10s each. Under the new arrangement juveniles between 17 and 19 will travel free of cost,' except that boys between those ages not travelling with parents will havo to pay the usual £5 10s. The exception is intended to preclude from a free passage the Public Schoolboys, who, it is considered, ore well able to pay the small'passage mony. Single women over 18 years of ag»> now paying £l6 10s, will in future onlj need to pay £ll. Married couples without family, Iritp erto paying £l6s 10s each, have in future to pay only £ll each. Single men over 19 years of ajge, now paying £l6 10s, will in future 'need,to pay £l3 15s. In effect the new clauses mean thai the £ll rate, which previously applied only to married men and women with families, has been extended. to single women over 19, and married couples without families.
All those people whose cases are in hand but who have not yet actually sailed for New Zealand wiil have the benefit of the lower rate 3. _ Thus assisted passengers by the Corinthic, whicli leaves on April 3rd. will have a refund fares already paid.
