LOCAL ELECTIONS.

CANDIDATES' ADDRESSES. Before a fair attendance, the Citizens' Association candidates continued their election campaign in the Papanui Town Hall last night. Mr J. A. Frostick occupied the chair, and introduced the speakers. The Mayor, Mr ,T. A. Flesher, who was present, briefly addressed the meeting. He asked those present to renew the confidence which they had placed in !iim two years ago by re-electing him to the Mayoralty. The affairs of the city had been carefully handled during the" period of his office, he said, and he went on to explain the present rating position of the Council.

11l answer to a question, he said that he would like, to see all municipal electors put on the same footing as Parliamentary electors, so far as voting was concerned.

Mr J. N. Du Feu, who is standing in the Association "s interests as a candidate for the City Council, said he was not seeking this position from any sense of self-gratification. Christchurch had been his home for a period of 51 years, and he was ready to place all his services at the disposal of the city. He urged his hearers to re-elect Mesdauiis Herbert and Eoberts to the Hospital Board, where their services had proved invaluable during their terms of office. The speaker said he was not antagonistic to the Labour Party in any shape or form, but he thought that that party should not be given an opportunity of experimenting —especially with municipal trading. He reminded them that it would be the ratepayers' money which would be used to commence these schemes. He thought that the ratepayers should not allow anyone to foist a system of municipal trading upon them, where failure meant a big loss to the citizens. Mr D. Eowse stated, that lie had been a member of the Christchurch Drainage Board during the passing of the recent loans for sewerage extension. He thought that the city affairs could be overhauled with advantage, and an attempt made to reduce the rates. He was a strong supporter of the proposed amalgamation of a large number of the local bodies in the city. There we're too many of these in existence controlling local affairs at present. The candidate also advocated the establishment of city quarries. This, he said, would tend to effeet a considerable saving in the expenditure on roads. The watering of roads to keep down the dust nuisance was also dealt with by Mr Eowse, who stated he was in favour of the water reticulation being extended to the outer areas. If he were elected he would endeavour to be impartial, and give every one a "square deal." Although a member of the Citizens' Association, if there were any question which arose which required individual decision he would give that decision to the, best of his ability.

Crs. E. H. Andrews and A. Williams also spoke. A vote of thanks was.passed to the speakers. -

Citizens' Association candidates will address the electors to-night at 8 o 'clock in the Beckenham Hall, Beckenham. To-morrow night meetings will be held in the Woolston school, Woolston, and in the Eolleston street Hall, Linwood, at 8 o'clock.
