Notes on the Bating. The -wind went Tound to the rainy quarter not Ion? after tho ]ast race yesterday, and it rained hard all night and continued all tho morning, the result beir»g a moderate attendance and a email turnover ou tho totalisator. All Style was withdrawn from the Myross "Welter, leaving five runners, 'The public made Marmont a good favourite, and all there is to say about the. race is that he got away well and allowed Laughie to lead into the straight, when he took charge and won very cleverly from Cornflower., Hiss Adonis and Quick Match stood on the mark in tho New River Harness Trot, but all the rest went into their hopples smartly. At the end of the first mile, Trysoon was handling the soft going so well and pulling so hard that W. Jonea allowed her to ran to the front, but First Glance went after her and the pair soon had such a nice lead that it looked a certainty that they would run first and second. Their stamina, however, was not good enough to eee out the solid pace they were setting, and both stopped so badly that they were beaten very _ easily by Lucky Harold, who won comfortably. He is a good stayer and gave a-much better showing than he did in

li;s previous essay. Lcnamhov, who eamo from a long war back, was forced to cover a lot of ground. He is certainly a good game pacer in the mud.

Kilbarry wa3 withdrawn from tbe President's Handicap, leaving nine to face tha barrier. There was a long delay at tb.3 post owing fo the waywardness of Ecuador, tfbo charged through the tapes six times before a start was made. The field was 9oon strung out a long way ar.d the placed horses cverttual'v caiiie from those that did not find their feet smartly. Valdamo, Soltoe, and Warhaven shot out from a field that had bunched entering the straight, and Valdamo won well. Soltoe got a good mil but Warhaven. who finished third and appeared to be rather much for his small rider, had a bad pas?a.gf. Valdnmo was not backed -with any confidence by his people t « he was' ridden bv a tinv bor. J. Ellis, a diminutive brother to F. W. Ellis, to whom the youngster is apprenticed. The litt'.e fel'ow shaped very welt on his angular mount, ft was a struggle to.- him to carry ihe saddle ird lend bats to scales sft»r he b*d won. Futon BM'». Ecuador. Fulmar, B'o-vn, ar.d Bright Mark were biatean en their merit*.

The Intercartill Steen'echase was a poor pffair «s Ca*#e!a was the on'y one of the fiv« runners to romnlefe the course without falling. Xone of the riders was nadly hurt, but th-?v all had some contusions. F. Johnson, rider of Ignition, had nbrasiors on his hand when the Borob'rdo "elding f»i] at the first of the stand double. Before Ignition had jumped the second rf tho double, an onlooker caught him as he galloped on and »«f out fo nmp'ete the course. He did so with his feet through the leathers instead of the irons, and he was lucky cno"gh. not to be hung tin when the tired seiding f«ll at the second last fence. Evex if he had completed tho course, Ignition would not have got anv place money as he had misled the Becond fence of the stand double. Ellesmere baulked repeatedl- until Ignition came a'ong and gave him a lead. Mettle Drift fell heavilv at the back of the course and his rider, Mr J. Lane-ford, got a bad shaking. Blazing Light's rider "was not hurt.

The four runners in the Awarua Handicap looked well when paraded, and of them tho public backed Listening Post and Ravenna heavily, but let the.others run with little on them. That, ihe judgment was correct was soon proved, as after Ravenna had set a solid pace for seven furlongs, Listening Post ran up to her and won cleverly, tho two bcinjf well clear of those behind them and getting further a*ay. The Bluff Handicap was (he best- of good things for Apache. Ho did not £et away

very smartly and had to cover a lot ot extra pround, but after going four furlongs the Sfhleiino gelding- ran round his opponents and won very easily. This is ft greatly improved gelding and lie Will be rooro than useful. next season. Unco he took the lead in (bis race nothin; looked lo have a. chance of catching him. The Dunedin-owned pacer, Kinnv . Lou, wag favourite for tho Dash Saddle Trot, of n mile, but he never showed up. Aftei Ten Bells, Lady Joffre, Daikstreafa, and Koua had led in turn, Great Count took charge and looked a winner, but he tired nnd the vigorously ridden Snowcap got up tc beat him by nearly a length, the two being wel! clear of Ten Bells, who was third.

Geranial tried to win the Winter Oats Handicap all the way, but she never got well e'ear as something was always tackling her. Beauty Light and Kilbarry had tho finish to themselves, and Beauty Lisht prevailed bv a short head from the Kilbroney gelding, afl*r having cimc from last and round the field. Kilfane did not shape well and neither did Geranial. Bloom dashed io the front at three furlongs and was being proclaimed the winner when ho disappeared from view just as smartly as he had taken charge. Coastguard fell just after' entcting the atraie-ht for the run home. An enquirv was held into the eauSe of the old geldins falling, and the conclusion arrived at was that it was accidental. A. E. Didliam, the rider of Coastguard, got out of 0, b-'d-looking fall with a Slight abrasion, on the forehead. *

jtfotes on the Racing,

Tko day's racing opened with the Is'ovice ! the eievciwi hour withdrawal of i l-esuve and. Jingle JSelk leaving siz- j lecii starters, line licid was the largest j oi the day. Tannitauser and Erin's Hoval monopolised, the betting, but,, the larourixa 'lacnftausei- did cot begin correctly and practically tooJt no part in the race. Erin's lloyai made no mistakes and led from start to finish, and won in the improved time of 2m 57 3-ss, or 8 2-5s better than hia handicap. The -winner is a four-year-old gelding by Erin's King from. Boyal Blue, and is a speedy pacer. Mary Galindo showed a lot of speed in patches. In the., back straight she broke, but settled down in time to go on and beat Ycnot for second money. Winter Audubon, Beattr, and Clam Zolock were the most prominent of the others, but never looked like winners. The Kai Xai Handicap 'was a poor race, and resulted in an easy victory for the Australian-bred gelding Roetrevor, who quickly made up his handicap and had the result in safe keeping a long way from horns. Sunny Jim trotted one of his races to date, but failed to sustain his effort over the last furlong. Sol broke up soon after the start and Bothmoor and May Beta, were outclassed. The' race was run in fast -time, as the placed horses, Rostrevor, Grace Graltan, and Sunny Jim, improved on their handicaps S l-ss, 3 4-as, and 3s respectively. There was no scratching in the Free-for-All. The field numbered six hijh class horses, and when they paraded in ' the enclosnre little fault could be found with their condition. Sheik was favourite, with Onyx, Logan Chief, H«alm, Man o' War and ! Acron backed in that order. The position* at the start were Onyx on the rails, Realm, Logan Chief, Sheik, Acron, with Man o' War on the outside. After one false start, due to Acron not coming up, ihe field was dispatched .in excellent line. In tie first

fifty yards Sheik went (o a break and. Logan Ch.iet was chopped out. (join™ out of the straight Onyx led Realm. Acron, Logan Chief, Sheik, and Man o' War, and in this order they raced until going down the back ettaight, where Onyx Icwt her position, and Realm tc-ck charge from Acron, Onyx, Logan Chief, and Sheik with Man o' War failing 05. Leaving the straight the iaat time the order was practically the same, but at thitt Logan Chief made a forward move and raced into third place. Four furlongs from home Realm retired and Logan Chief went !n rmrauit of Acron. The latter wis under pressure at the home turn and Logan Chief went on to win bv three lengths from Acron. who was a. similiar distance in front of Shei"!. Then came Realm. Onyx, and Man o' War. Tlea-r" *f s '•>««i»inent- for ten furIon??, when she gradually dropped back and »« beaten out of a place. Onyx raced much below cjcoec-tatiors. She was in a good position at the end of a mile, but did not finish with any determination. Man o' War was always well back, and judging by his effort is a Ion? way below his best. The 'Wiormaroe of the winner wis a smart one !>nd stamps him ok a really good pacer. Logan Chief has done a. lot of racing, and it soeaka well for the manner in which he b>/='b«en trained by J. J. Kenneriey, who evidenth* thorsughly understands the *ort of Logan Pointer and Renins. Belli. This was his fourth success this season, as he previously had won the Summer Cup at the Auckland T.C.'s Summer Meeting, the Drniedin Cup at the Forbury Park T.C.'s Summer Meeting, and the Fiee for All at the Otahuhu T.C.'s Summer Meeting. Acron paced a fine race into second place, and although beaten, was not disgraced. Afterlosing a lot of ground in the early stages of the Tace Sheik finished third and only for making this mistake would have finished closer up. The success of Logan Chief was Very oopular,- and at -the conclusion of the race he was decorated witli the Blue Riband bv Mrs Armstrong, wife of Mr K. A. Annstrong, president of tho club, cheers being given for thb owners, driver, and the horse. All etarted in the Armstrong Handicap. Locanda, Mac was favourite and backed down to odds on, with Donside, Dalnahinc, and JlreAmalioh. the beat backed of the others. Although Dalhahine led from start td finish, the race provided plenty of interest, fend in a great finish down the straight Locanda.. Mac just failed to reach tho winner by a neck. Dalnahine, has raced most consistently this season. This was his third win, while he has been placed ten times. Drcama.!ion was alwavs well placed, and finished third just clear of Donside. who was alow in getting into his stride. Dean Dillon ran well for three parts of the journey, but w»* left without a. final effort. Glaudore was outclassed and Adatr fell three furlongs from home. His driver. W. J. Tomkinson, escaped injury, but Adair was sore and returned to the enclosure lame. Harold Burwwod, nn aged geiding by Harold Dillon from Pride of Burwood, o*ned bv the Christehurch sportsman Mr I;. O. Hogarth, and trained hvJ. ■H. T™"" I .' scored an easy win in the Middle Class Handicap. From the fall of the ni.fr he maintained an even gait and won without being extended in 4m 40e. Signorclla, who made most of the early running, outstayed Rita Rye and finished second vvith blunt Artist at the head of a, struhg-out field. Rose Pointer was seen in a. favourable light in tho Sharp* Handicap. She quickly. .mado up her handicap and four furlongs from homo was in the lead.. None of the others was capablo of extending her, and at the finish she won by six lengths from Rarebell Direct who put in a well sustained rim over the'last quarter of a. mile, and, defeated Thixendale for second money. Cute Lad paced a good race but was beaten lox speed. Pani led into tho back straight fchen he broke and lost his position, while Squatter and Liberate raced a, long v?4y below I expectations. . Audobell was installed a warm favourite in the Lambton Handicap and the confidence placed in tho kaJM>rotb«r to-Peter McKinr.ey was fully justified a* at no stage of the race did he look like being defeated. Grace Gral'tan made tho running for seven furlongs, when Audobell assumed the lead Land won in the improved time of 4ra 47 4-o3 'or 4 1-Ss better than his handicap. lne winner is a young trotter and is one of the most improved horses seen out this season. Despite a penalty of 43yds, Rostrevor beat all but the winner and wa.9 ! unluokv in meetin.* such, an improved horse. 1 Grace "Grattin and Carbinea fought out ft keen finish for third place, the former gaiainc the ■verdict by a narrow margin. Locanda made amends for his defeat in the Armstrong Handicap by annexing the Speedway Handicap from five others. Theson of Brent Locanda was a slightly better favourite than Logan Lou and paid a little over even money. Onyx paced a better race than in the Free, For All and finhished very fast in second place, with Pitarca, third and Fancy Boy fourth. The laM-named led for a mile, when he tired and failed to stay on. Logan Lou broke soon after the start, and Coledrift at the end of sir furlongs.
