SWIMMING.

NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL

The Council of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association met last evening, Mr W. E. D. Bishop presiding. There were also present—Messrs W. H. Benson (Otago), C. Bryant (Wanganui), J. Jackson (Havrike's- Bay), A. L. Wilkinson (Tafanaki), F. G. Dunn (South Canterbury), A. McDonald (Westland), D. Coulter (Canterbury), A. R.. Jscobson (Manawatu}, and B. O'Neill (Wellington;. Following the recommendation of the conference of Centres, the rules were amended to provide that the entrance fee for championships should be reduced from 7s 6d to ss. Other amendments to the rules provided that the flying squadron race should count for the championship shield; that a 220 yds race should be substituted for tho 440 yds race for junior boys, and that Centres in default with their returns uhould cease to have voting power on the Council. The following New Zealand records were passed:— 500 Metre*—A. Baird (Auckland), 7min 14 3-ssec. 440 yds—D. Pelham (Auckland), smin 38 3-ssec. 150 yds Backßtroke—L. Fairgray (Auckland), lmin 5G 4-ssec. 220 yds Ladies' Brcaatstroke—Miss Gladys Pigeon (Auckland), 3min 48sec. 100 yds Ladies' —Miss Ena Stockley (Auckland), lmin 5 3-ssec 220 yds Intermediate Girls—Miss Jean Bell (Auckland), 2min 57 3-ssec. The Hororata Club wsus granted affiliation.

The Amateur Swimming Union of Australia wrote stating that an invitation had been sent to John Weissmuller to visit Australia. The secretary of the Australian Union added: "I hope an arrangement can be entered into between our respective organisations for hia appearances in <he Dominion, but this would have to be some time in November, as he will have to start his Australian tour in the middle of Decernier, so that; he can return to the United States by the middle of March." Members expressed the opinion that'- the time suggested would be wiauitable for New Zealand. It was resolved to refer the matter to the Centres to ascertain views. The secretary and Mr N. C. Stockley were deputed to prepare articles on swimming for the School Journal. The secretary reported that he had written to the Australian Union enquiring if Eve and Christie would be able to visit New Zealand next seaaon, and had also sent a similar enquiry to the Swedish Association with inspect to Arne Borg. , Miss Charlotte Epstein, of tie Women's Swimming Association, New York, wrote expressing the opinion that there would b» no difficulty in arranging for American girls to vieit the Dominion.
