NAVAL COMMANDER FOR N.Z.

HIS CAREER. (rnoji otra oww cobbespowdjkt.) LONDON, February 19. Commander Arthur M. Peters, 8.N., D.S.C., of Harefield, Devonshire, who lias been appointed to H.M.S. Dunedin, in succession to the Hon. Guy Stopford, 8.N., was born in 1888. He is the younger and only surviving son of the late Major-General Peters, who commanded the 4th Hussars, and the Hon. Mrs Peters. Ho was educated in tho Britannia, and entered the Eoyal Navy in 1904. He served first in H.M.S. Glory and H.M.S. Diadem, flagships on the China Station, of Admiral Sir Gerard Noel, which conveyed 11.8. H. Prince Arthur of ConnaUght on the/first Garter mission to Japan. Later, as Lieutenant, he was in H.M.S. Exniouth, flagship of Admiral Sir Edmund Poc, in the Mediterranean Station. After spccialisiug in signals in 19] 2, lio was appointed- signal officer in H.M.S. Southampton to Commodore W. Goodcuough, and ho visited Kiel witli the ships of the Fleet in June, 1914. During the Great "War he was in H.M.S. Southampton, flagship of the Second Light Cruiser Squadron, and in H.M.S. Orion, second flagship in tho Second Battle Squadron, as signal officer, and flag-lieutenant to Rear-Admiral W. Goodenough. Commander Peters was mentioned in dispatches .for the able manner in which he carried out the signal communications of the Second Light Cruiser Squadron in the Battlo of Jutland, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, and he was present at all the niajor engagements in the North Sea during the five years of war.

After that Commander Peters served as Fleet signal officer in H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth, on the staff of Admiral Sir Charles Madden, and later as First Lieutenant of the Signal School at Portsr mouth. Promoted to Commander in 1922, he then served in the Signal Department at the Admiralty. In April he will leave for New Zealand to take up his duties as Commander of 11.M.5. Dunedin, Commodore Boa I. In 1912. Commander Peters married Agnes Vivien, only child of Colonel A. V. Payne, C.M.G.", and Mrs Payne, M.8.K.", of Musbury, Devon, and has one "daughter, Margaret Camilla, born in 1917. Mrs Peters, who has a very charming personality, will accompany her husband to New Zealand, their daughter going with them. They arc looking forward with great zest to their three vears' sojourn in New Zealand. Commodore Peters, during times of leisure, hopes to indulge i" shooting and hunting, while he is also a keen lawn tennis player.
