The Victorian cricketers commenced ft match to-day against Hawko's Bay in ideal conditions and on a good wicket. "Winning thotose, tho local captain elected to bat, and Noale and Stephenson opened. Two wickets had fallen -when the board showed 35. Temperton a*nd Beuth then became associated, and in spite of frequent chanees of bowling, they* carried on merrily to 228 beforo Temperton, after a brilliant ,135, was bowled by Ebeling. The partnership produced 103. iitmli earned w ■ 1 j 65 beforo giving an easy catch to Willis. O'Conneil and Bernau carried tho total to 299, when- the former wa3 caught out after compiling l 18 runs Owen assisted Bernau to bring up 350 beforo being bowled by Ebeling. Bornau's wicket was the next to fall. After scoring 58 ho went out to one from Mayne and missed, and Austin quickly had the bafls off. New man did not last long, the fourth 'ball finding his wicket. OPERA COMPANY. Yesterday afternoon the Veterans' team played, tho J. C. Williamson's Opera Company at Hagley Park. The match was purely & friendly one, and a good day's sport waa enjoyed bv a fair crowd of spectatots. The Veterans' team won by 45 runs, the total scores being; Veterans' 150, and J. C. Williamson Opera Co. 105.
