RHODES MEMORIAL CONVALESCENT HOME
The annual meeting of subscribers to tlie Rhodes -Memorial Convalescent Home was held on Tuesday. the chairman, Mr George Jameson, presiding. In moving the adoption of the annual report and statement of accounts, iTie chairman referred to the fact vii.il dining the past year the Home had bc&i'. incorporated by Act of i'ariiument, a was now a bociy corporate with perpetual succession, and the freehold of the Home had been acquited trom the A\ llson Estate 011 such terms as assured the continuance of the good work of the home as a benefit to the people of Canterbury in perpetuity. During tlie past year 469 patients had passed through the Home, the daily average being' 29.6, but Mr Jameson mentioned that it did not appear to be generally known that the Home was available to anyone desirous of a rest and a change of air.
The Home, which stands on twentytwo acres of land, was given to the people of Canterbury in 1887 as a memorial to the late Robert Heaton Rhodes, of Elmwood. and the first patients were received in May, 1888. AYhen first established it was intended that the Home should be under tlie control of the local Hospital Board, but owinn to objections made l>y that Board f.t the time, it had remained a separate institution.
During the past ye.%- a of £IOO was received under the will of the late Hon. Charles Ijouissnn, who as a trustee of the Hynian Marks Estate, always took a keen interest in the work of the Home.
Messrs W. Henderson and 0. Jameson who retired by rotation, were reelected to the committee.
