CYCLISTS DISQUALIFIED. THE MACKIE-CAREY INCIDENT. At last night's meeting of the Canterbury Centre of the JN'ew Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union, W. J. Hackie and F. -J. Carey, two well-known cycle riders, were disqualified until July 31 at, the end of the season in Christchurcb, for. an incident which occurred at the Mairehau Cycling Club's Bports at the English Park Stadium recently. 1 »

A letter was received from tho Mairehau Cycling Club asking the Centre to endorse the disqualification of F. J. Carey for twelve months for boring, and W. liackie for twelve months for fighting. The chairman stated that the position was that the club really recommended the Centre to disqualify these men for the periods suggested^ Both riders handed in against tho decision of the club. Mr A, A. \V. Webb stated that it had been reported in the papers that tlie riders bad been disqualified. However, tho letter made it clear that the club was only asking the Centre to disqualify the men. After further discussion, Mackie and Carey were called in, and Mr 8.. Nash, president of the Mairehau club, appeared, on behalf of the club.

In stating the case, Mr Nash stated that the evidence had been taken on the ground at the time of the incident. They asked the Centre- to disqualify the men as suggested. .From what he saw of the incident, it appeared that Carey had deliberately run Mackie up the track. Carey blamed Sowden, another rider, but the club recommended the Centre to disqualify Carey. Mackie had deliberately used his _fiats to Carey, and this was t.he reason for tfle club's recommendation on his account. .

C. JV Sowden, one of the competitors in the race, stated that Carey's handle had struck him when he was riding inside the white line. Ho could not say much more about the occurrence except That he had gone on with the race. Carey, in stating his case, said that just as they were entering the straight he received a bump, and he went towards the bank. He did not know Mackie was on his wheel, and could not help the incident. Mackie: How was it that your elbow struck me if I was on your wheel? Carey: I did not touch you.

Mackie, in stating his case, said that just as they were entering the straight Carey put his elbow out and shoved him up to the bank. He admitted that he had hit out at Qarey and had generally created a disturbance. He felt very sorry for having done so, but he acted under provocation because several times previously within the past_ six weeks he had been fouled by the same rider, and had put in a protesi about it to tho English Park people. Mr J. C. Free moved that the Mairehau Club's request be upheld. Mr T. H. Clough seconded the motion pro forma. '

Mr J. M. Coffey moved as an amendment that Carey should be disqualified till the end of the season—July 31st. Mr G. Henderson seconded the amendment, which was carried by nine votes to eight. Mr V. Price then moved a further amendment that Carey be exonerated on account of the bump.

This amendment' lapsed for want of a seconder. Mr Bekicour then ruoved that Mackie be let off with a caution. Ihe motion was seconded by Mr Uren and was lost. Mr Coffey's amendment that Mackie be disqualified till the end of the season wag carried by 14 votes to four.
