ASHBURTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

At the monthly meeting of the Borough School Committee, held last evening, there were present Messrs John Watson ' (chairman), W. H. Woods, E. Coker, K. Marsdfcn, J. W. Bowden, J. S. Laing, K. McElhinney, and A. Bushell. ' Tho financial statement showed a credit balance of £9 6s 4d. Begarding the erection of the fence around the school ground, a communication was received from the Education Board to the effect that it could not • depart from its prevous decision to contribute £l4O. Mr Marsdfen suggested that they should allow the letter to be on tho table. Mr McElhinney said they should withdraw tho offer. Mr Bowden stated that with the present liability on the swinging bath, they were unable to contribute, even £3O. On tho motion of Mr Woods, it was cided to forward tho following reply to tho Board:—"As our commitments alreaoy exceed our available fund' 3. we are unable to increase our offer beyond £3O, which sum would have to he raised by subscription. Wo would respectfully point out that though tho erection of the fence was a matter for tho Board, owirg to the urgency of tho work, we aro prepared to incur liability to tho extent named." Tho motion was carried. Mr Woods considered that the study of astronomy was beyond the primary school children, ana he stated that he bad approached the. giver of the telescope, who had no objection to handing it over to the secondary school. It was further stated that the cost of housing the instrument would be beyond the committee's finances, and it was resolved that the chairman bo deputed to approach Mr F. Z. D. Ferriman, who presented the telescope, beforo making arrangements for its disposal. In view of the prevalence of infantile paralysis it was decided to postpone the carnival set down for March. The selection of another date' was left to the organiser, Mr W. Page, and tho stallholders. Messrs Bowden and Laing were appointed a visiting committee for the month.
