The New Judge.

The very interesting announcement is made to-day that Mr O. T. J. Alpers has been appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court, whidh has been reduced bckiw strength by the retirement of Mr Justice Hosking. The new Judge is not a jSTew Zealander, but lie lias been so long a resident of Christchurcli that we look upon him as a native, and his elevation to the Benoih will give genuine pleasure to the Christehurch public. His career has been a very interesting one, and has been of such-a kind as to produce qualities which are of much value in a Judge of the Supreme Court. "While tho first requirement in a ' Judge is sound legal judgment, a knowledge of the world ig a, hardly less desirable qualification. A career as schoolmaster, University lecturer, journalist and barrister could not but broaden and mellow any intelligence, and this, which has been Mr Justice Alpers's career, has had this result. The new Judge is a man of many accomplishments; he has gathered laurels in tho groves of learning, in the theatre, and at the Bar, and during the war years and after liis talents were of very gTeat value to the national cause. In congratulating him on his new dignity we are sure we aro expressing the general nentiment of tike public, and we hope that the country will long enjoy bis services on the judicial bench.
