RATANA'S RETURN.
DEMONSTRATIVE WELCOME. (Sr*CIA.L TO "TEE tress.") WANGANUI, December 26. Ratana's homecoming after his world tour took place on Wednesday, and it was the occasion of soenes which rivalled Mecca on special religious festivals. Over three thousand Maoris awaited the return of the famous miracle man. They were of all ages, from the piccaninny in arms to old men and women tottering to the foot of the hilL The arrival of llat-ana and liis party was the signal for a remarkable demonstration, mostly of a religious nature. Young and old were to be seen in devout attitudes offering fervent prayers. At the same time hakas, poi dances, and musical selections by an orchestra and band were to be seen and heard. Every means was taken to envelop Ratana in mystery. Nobody seemed to know exactly where or who he was. It was noticeable that during the official welcome ceremony Ratana did not occupy the dais erected. Instead, he lounged* amongst the congregation, legs crossed, and wearing an old grey suit with neither collar nor tie. A remarkable degree of religious fervour was manifested during tic greater portion of the day. even the kai, of which there was a great abundance, being neglected. This, it is true, did not suit the desires ot' some of the younger generation, but thev evidently considered it a matter of policy not to express their feelings. The two Wanganui reporters who gained admittance to tho settlement were summarily ordered off when it was discovered they were not wearing the officially issued passport. It is significant that the ordering off did not take place till Ratana arrived, and the ceremonies in the holy of holies were about to begin.
