Bishopeourt, in Park terraoe. which was severely damaged by fire in the early hours of Christmas morning, was owned by the Church Property Trustees and was insured in the Norwich Union Office for about £2300. Canon H. Jones, who was occupying the house at the time of the fire, had an insurance policy on his furniture and effects. The wedding ring, which was the sulv.ject of a paragraph in "The Press" reccntiv. as having found on the Milford Track, has, after 15 years, found nn owner. The Tourist Department in Wellington received a wire from a. I)unedin gentleman statins: that a- reverend gentleman now residing in Melbourne whilst on his honeymoon trip 15 years a.go host the ring 'at Pcmpnlona huts. Correspondence followed with tho manager of the 'Milford Track at Glade House. The ring is to bo forwarded to its rightful owner.

A horse's miraculous C6e?.pe_ from, death (writes the ''Southlaud News' correspondent from the Milford Sounds track) occurred a few days ago. The horse was engaged carrying stores fro mi the Pats. While going below Mt. Balloon it slipped on a narrow ot rock, balanced itself for a moment, ana thCrfi fell over a. clear drop of 30ft and mllcd over and over for .about 100 ft dawn tho hillside. To the Astonishment of the man in chn.iige it struggled to its fdeti, and though very muc.li bruised and shaken it was able to be led along the hillside until a suitable olnee was found to get it on tho traok again. The tussocky nature of the growth evidently broke the hardness of its fall, but it was a, remarkable performance to go through without serious results.

One of tho most attractive places for a visit during the holiday season is tho Portobello Marine Fish Hatchery, where an hour full of interest and instruction may be spent with- much pleasuro (says the Dunedin "Star"). Tho iull name of the hatchery includes a marine biological station, and tho work being carried on there is at present mainly observational. The possibility of renewing the stocks of turbot, lobsters, and English crabs does not exist at present, on account of tho high cost of freight, and meanwhile all the existing stocks have been liberated. Though so far no results liave" been observed, yet on the analogy of the introduction of the two species of salmon which are now abundantly naturalised in New Zealand waters it is almost certain that all three will yet be met with in our seas. Meanwhile the work is all observational, and consists in recording the growth, food, occurrence, and life histories of the food fishes of the adjacent sea. The tanks were built for observation and not for show, but they contain nearly twenty species of local fishes, besides many other forms of marine life, such as crabs, hermit crabs, sea anemones, sea urchins, sea slugs, starfishes, brittle stars, and tunicates, several of them dredged from a depth of sixty fathoms. While the fishes do not exhibit the intense colours of tropical species, they have a-quiet beauty of their own. To see blue cod. trumpeter, Maori chief, moki. trevalli, sea perch, spotties, parrot fish, leather -jackets, pig fish, and others swimming in the tanks is a revelation to those who only know them on the slabs of a fish shop or fried on their breakfast tables.
