The December Stakes resulted; Lovcbox 1 s Steaton 2, Flyaway 3. ' ' Inter Cities Motor Service Ltd. will '' run a 30-seater limousine to Ashburton Trots to-day. Particulars are adverI Jtiaed. t _ i The Maniapoto gelding To Kawa / made a good start as a hurdler by * winning the Bahotu Hack Hurdles at 'f x the Taranaki Meeting yesterday. He t i has both size and speed, and his career % a jumper should be an even brighter ,i that he was more than useful in hack ("company. i■ • , J. Dombroski's three wins at New J Plymouth yesterday give him a clear /lead in the winning apprentices' list. l v Last season Dombroski at one period looked likely to finish up in premier Imposition, but an enforced holiday upset 'Jshis opportunity. Eational seemed, ±o have lost all Inform this but liis win in the Hying Handicap at tho Taranaki Meeting, though only against moderate fe company, will reinstate him in public W and though usually well eared for by the handicappers, should 'M, account for further prize-money dur- '# ing the holiday period. K Clandhu was one of the early favoura&itcs for the New Zealand Cup, and Although, ho failed to win a race this *®iea3on. in six starts prior to the opening of the Manawatu Racing Club's Meeting yesterday, his win in the Manawatu Cup would suggest that there was ample justification for tho lupport accorded him for the big twoiile race at Riccarton. s Te Kara, who won the Auckland Cup jlttder Bst 41b yesterday, dead-heated for first with Muraahi last season with Ht 61b, including 81b overweight. Mimotic, who won the Great Northttn Foal Stakes at Ellerslie yesterday, b the second by the Mebourne Cup dinner, Comedy King, to win tho race, Biplane having won in 1916. A Press Association cable message om. Melbourne gives the result of tho opetoun Cup as follows:—Graball, Gst lb, 1; Sailing Home, Bst 51b, 2; Iniguer, 7s.t 21b, 3. Won by a head, [me, 2min 22isec. Our Auckland correspondent teleaphed last night that the weather had Bar6d, and there was every prospect !..a fine day for the opening of the ickland Trotting Club's, Summer Meetg to-day. The rain that has fallen is Hot done the track any harm, and me good racing may be looked for. Ie bracketed pair, Acron and Lady lan, will probably command most sup»rt for the Auckland Trotting Cup, id if the former leaves the mark corctly he must bo hard to beat. There J are eight horses on scratch, and they 'will probably make the pace hot from tho - start. Locanda Mac has been doing good work on the track, and providing tho weather keeps fine he should faceSrell, but on the same mark is Ahuriri, who has only to bogia smartly to be very dangerous. The Great Northern Derby looks like being a i-match between Kohara and Glcnelg. The former has won both over a mile Ud a half and two miles, whilo Glenelg .has not raced over a longer distance & than a mile and a quarter, but has | ihown himself a brilliant pacer. % i; . trhe following re-handicaps have boon i declared for the Winton Trotting Club's r j Meeting:—Commissioners' Handicap: Catriona 48. All fho acceptors went to the post for the Summer Hurdles Handicap, Portside. Doing made an even .money favourite. Ho went, out to win all tho way, and jumped beautifully, and every fcnco was worth a good two lengths to him. Red Kriss went like a novice. Frisco Mail was always handy and going well, and after fencing cleanly and .well he ran up to the leaders after jumping the second last fence, and lie romped home, quito outclassing the rest. "Wapping ran off at the second fence, and Kerry Star feu thore. Londonderry ran a great race when very short of work. On looks Penury Rose will be greatly benefited by tho raoe, and will win soon. , ~ Shandre was left hopelessly in the Salisbury Handicap. Incursio was out in front early, but the other* were always close to Jiim. Ophir shot to the front with three furlongß to go, and looked as if he would romp homo, but as usual he failed to stay on, and was well beaten a furlon? from home. Six furlongs is evidently the length of his •tether, and then he will need to bo patiently ridden to 6ee it out. Jubilant, vigorously ridden by O. Emerson, failed to hold her ground after getting away well, and fell back many lengths, but Emerson never gave •up hope, and keeping hard at the Gay Lad filly* ho got to tho front before reaching tho airtight and won easily. This filly stays well, but she is lazy, and it requires a strong horseman to keej> her going. Incursio looks due for a win shortly. Heather Lad was always well placed, but ho was not good enough on the day, but hifl day is not far off. Hungry Hill, Obligio, Cumbrae, and Roman Archer never looked dangercniß. Tho two-year-olds that started for the Dunedin Handicap stripped woll, Overdrawn looking much better than he did at Christchurch. The start was bad, Joyeuse being left altogether, while Quickform got away » (hade in front of Overdrawn and: Circulation. Overdrawn failed to run on, and Circulation was *ot good enough to catch Quickform. Victory Bond wae always well placed, but never looked dangerous. The seven runners in the Otago Handicap stripped well. Rivalry went down at _a. cancer, but the rest went boldly. Loughrea was on tho big side, much more robust than at Christchurch. Palestrina looked well, and eo did Happy Warrior. Mountain Lion, Rivalry, and Lucinotte also went woll. Thoro was a lot of milling at the start, but eventually tho horses got away in fair line. Mountain Lion made tho pace bo solid that with a furlong to go he looked a certainty, but Mantua enmo like » flash and had the «co won fifty yards from home. The Trial Stakes produced two fillies in Ketrosooct and Peho. Retrospect was always" well up, and came on to win easily, hut Peho just struggled on to get second money. By and by Peho will win better class races tha* she wns in to-day. Moorland, The Harp, Buglo No to, and Geranial "were always in the lead in the .Federal Handicap, hut Moorland always hud it on the othors, and after struggling for tho midfflo furlong the son of Finland won easily. Ravenna looked as if a race would do her good, and Bugle Note and Gerivnial were beaten on their merits. Geranial in particular failed in the last furlong. Gav Juliet, who finished fourth, got away very went to the post for the Burnside Handicap, Winkie's Best being made a good favourite. He was beaten fairly, -for a ter "ettin" awav well, Apple Dighton. who hid fe<t all the "way, was too much for him. Thero was only one horse in it when it ramo to racing in the Otokia Welter, for Top Score never looked like bem? benten over the last two furlongs. Giantkiller who was favourite, wm well enoueh -Disced all the way, but the going was probably too hk'ding for him. Bonnie Winkie ran hke a past number, and Gunc&se, after making •ill the earlv running on a ground that suited him was the first beaten. Monoxide was very disappointing, and his running cannot be true. _ SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. Despite the rain which fell yesterday nn.l overnight, the West port Trotting Club was favoured with fine weather for the opemns day of its Midsummer Meeting. There w a pood attendance and speculation was brisk. The fields wore not krge, " ullt ' ua lacing was interesting. The scratching of L:ulv Sru:thfieUl. "\A 1 n J' berry, and Logic's Coronado left live stnr.ers in the Seddonvillo Handicap. Queen s General, owned and trained bv T. X.. Bennett, was favourite, and backed down to odd3-on. Sho began Brnartly and soon held a, commanding lead. In tho homo straight she waft cased up and won without being eritended. A furlong from home Bonny Niven looked like finishing second, when ho broke, and Linda. Dulon pained second .money. Neither Clario Eor Logan. h'yeo finished the course. The exhibition of trotting in tho Te Kuha Handicap - was of tho poorest description, Comfort being the only competitor to cover tbo journey without a mistake. Tho locally owned and trained Biilio Ashley led. from start to finish, and despite several mistakes casil/ disposed of Comfort, who lacked Hash, owing to bavins' contracted a cold since arrival at Westport. Rita Mac showed speed in patches, while Our Hope and Circus Girl were outclassed. All started in the Buller Handicap. Lone Rand was favourite, with LocancTa Bov, Somo Wilkes, Winsome Melody, and Golden Locanda backed in that order. From start to finish it was an interesting race, and the result appeared in doubt until the leaders passed the winning post. Locanda, Boy, from scratch, began well, and although he led throughout lie always had sufficient in reserve to stall off more than one determined challenge during the running of the lace, and finally he won nicely from Lono Hand, Eapier, and Norwood. The winner U a three-year-old colt bv Brent Locanda, from Red Maid, and is owned uud trained by the local sportsman W. Sevan, who drove him in tho race. Lono Hand did not begin well, but finished strongly, as did Eapier, who lest ground at the turns. Norwood paced a good race, and so did Somo "Wilkes, but was not equal to giving p.way 60 yards. Ho may do better before fh9 meeting closes. Logwood and Golden Locanda made a poor showing, whilo the solid pace set by tho leaders troubled the others. Boil Pang set a solid pace in the Addison's Handicap, and leading from tho fall of the flag won nicely in 3min 40sec, or 12sec better than his handicap. Red Comet showed improved form and finished second, with the favourite, Logan Lass, third. The last-named was subjected t-o an interrupted passage, and a protest was entered against L, F. Berkett, driver of Bon Pang, for alleged interference, but it was dismissed. Alpha. Plus showed speed in patches', but failed to negotiate the turns. General Thorpe ran a nice race and should soon be seen to better advantage. There was no scratching in the President's Handicap < mid assisted by tho mistakes of the other competitors, Zelica, scored an easy win from Billy Ashley and Dulcic Bingen. Zelica was in chargo at the end of a mile, She paid a useful double-figure dividend, ar.d looks liko winning moro money at tho holiday meetings. Billy Ashley, who was penalised 24yds for his win in the Te Kuha Handicap, easily beat all but the winner. Tho favourite, Dulcie Bingen, gave a. disapopinting display and broke repeatedly when under pressure. Taipoiti broke soon after the start and again in tho back straight tho last time. She looked big and should benefit by the race. Ecstasy, a. four-year-old filly by Logan Pointer from 0.1.C., ridden by H. Gaskill, scored on easy win in tho Denniston Handicap. Sho did not begin too well, but once into her stride paced a solid race and had the result in safe keeping some distance from home. Outstep went nway very fast and at tho end of two and a. half furlongs was twenty lengths in. front of the field, when ho broke and lost most of his advantago before settling down. He led, into the home straight, but failed to withstand a challenge from Mabon's Day. Prince Charlie made tho best showing of the others. Only five horses faced the starter in the Progress Handicap, nnd it was a poor contest, as both Smithfield and Red AuduFon, "who finished first and second respectively, paced unevenly, and the other three competitors were outclassed. The winner, Smithfield, is a. four-year-old son of Brent Locanda from Beilett-e, dam of Lady Joan. He was backed down to odds-on, but his display certainly did not warrant it, and he will find it hard to win in future. . Lone Hand made, amends for his defeat in the Buller Handicap by annexing the Stockton Handicap from five others. ' After allowing Logan LasS to make the early running, the son of PetCrcta. took charge going ouT of the straight the last time, and won ' easing up by a dozen length's, with Imprint a moderate third. Ked Comet did'not show up as prominently as in the AddTsons Handicap, when he finished, second to Bon Pang, Locanda Rose was outclassed and Lord Lytton ncrver got near'the leaders.
