SELWYN PLANTATIONS BOARD.

♦ MONTHLY MEETING. A meeting of the Selwyn Plantations Board waß held yesterday. Present—Messrs S. A. Staples (acting-chairman), G. Witty, M.P., G. Scott, E. Nairn, J". StoTev, S. H. Adams, W. T. Popple, and C. Wolfe. The financial statement showed a cfeditbalance on December 20th of £951 15s 4d. A letter was received from ' the Public Works Department stating that in future none of the Board's trees would be cut down without the consent of the Board. * In the course of his report, the Board's superintendent, Mr R. G. Robinson, said that only a small expenditure for general maintenance work had been incurred during tho month. About, 51,679 superficial feet of pine had' been milled from the Racecourse Hill plantation, together with 22J cords of 'slab firewood. Eighty gum' poles and 25 cords of grim firewood had been cut and disposed of. Some miles of firebreaks had been ploughed, and backfiring would be undertaken when the conditions were favourable for the work. Trees planted out and seedlings in nurseries continued to make excellent progress, and seed germination, although unusually slow, was quite satisfactory. The increasing number of requests for Christmas trees for worthy public institutions wou'.d make it very desirable periodically to plant out a hundred or so spruce firs for that purpose. The report was adopted, ..and {he matter of planting a hundred spruce £ts for use as Christmas trees was left in the hands of the superintendent.
