As Oxford and Cambridge depend on the Universities, so Mecca depends on. the pilgrimage. There are no local industries, but plenty of money is made by the inhabitants who ]et lodgings, act as guides to the ceremonies, and as baggage agents. Fruit and vegetables come from Taif, rice and foreign products from Jeddah. Poultry is fairly cheap, and mutton, milk, and butter plentiful. The permanent, population is about 70,000, while the pilgrimage brings in about 200,000 vistora annually.
