THE BANDSMEN'S MEMORIAL.

— ROTUNDA ON CAMBRIDGE TERRACE. A matter relating to the Bandsmen's Memorial caine before the City Council last night. Tho Entertainments Committee reported that it had -further considered th? question of the erection of a Band Hotunda on the site in Cambridge terrace, between Colombo and Manchester streets, which was approved by the Council, and recommended that the Bandsmen's Memorial Committee be approached with a view to having the rotunda they proposed to erect as a Bandsmen's Memorial erected on tho site referred to. If tho Memorial Committee to erect the rotunda on the- site suggested, the Committee further recommended the Council to grant a subsidy of 10s in' the pound on all subscriptions received for the purpose, with a maximum pavment by the Council of £SOO. Cr. W. H. Winsor said the proposed sit was not a proper one for the Bandsmen's Memorial. There were other sites in the city much more suitable. The Terrace • site was not healthy _by reason of river pollution in that locality. Or. W. E. Leadley said the bandsmen would not approve of the proposed site. The proper site for the memorial was in the Domain. Cr.'O. Anderson laid the Council had approved of the Cambridge terrace site for the municipal rotunda and if the site was good enough for that, it was good enough for the Bandsmen's Memorial. -

Cr. A.. "Williams said the bandsmen should be given the opportunity of saying whether they would accept the site oy not. . Cr. H. T. Armstrong said the Domain's Board Had pone to considerable .expense to prepare a site_ for_the memorial rotunda. The Council ishould go ahead with its own proposal to move the municipal rotunda to Cambridge terrace.

Cr. E. H. Andrews said the Terras eitf) was the most suitable one in the citv. Bv combining Funds bandsmen. and the Council could build a fine memorial rotunda. The £4OO set apart by the Council for a rotunda was mosC inadequate for the purpose, / Cr. J. K. Archer said that -J? the Cambridge terrace site was unhealthy on account of river pollution, then no rotunda should be placed there. Cr. A. MeKellar said there wa<s the probability of a tram route running along Manchester stret, and ffe Cambridge terrace site would then have tram lines on both sides. The Council adopted the report.
