AUCTIONS. H. MATSON AND CO. HMATSOX and CO. report on the Ad- • dington Market as follows: BEEF MARKET. To-dav -the yarding tallied 550. head. H. Mat son " and Compan/a entry was 150. The market generally was irregular and what one might call, from an agent's point of view, an unsatisfactory market. There wore many pens of very attractive cattle representing chiefly North Island consignments. In moat caeoe in the intereet of ih-e vendors, these particular consignments lrpro offered in separate parts of the yard. Curious to say the best sale, in our opinion, of beef for the day was that lino iurned out the previous week; and was re-offered to-day, and they certainly compared more than favourably with the Bulk of the other cattle offered, being just the right weights, good thick hides on them, and these cattle .n our opinion averaged anywhere from £2 t-o £2 2s 6d per hundred pounds. The writer did not see the sale ofmany local cattle, but woo of the opinion that good beef running from 8001b to 9501b the average price, with the one exception referred 10, wa3 35s a hundred pounds. Bullocks from 8001b and under sold anywhere from Hss to £2 2s 6d. The ratee were for all prime beef, and in that portion there were many cattle that were really over fatted «nd, perhaps a little bit. too weighty, and in view of the hot weather tho butcher 3 wero not keen on them. With the Jighter grade steer beef, unless restricted" with vendors' optimistic reserves or enlarged ideas in their assessment of weights, there wa3 good competition, and tho smaller tradesmen were buying persistently throughout but slowly. Cow and heifer beef was very irregular," some exceptionally fine exhibits being forward and on working out our eheet we find many of these to have realised 45fi. For the avcrago really prime fat cow or heifer, tho price was anywhere Trom 34s to 40s. Light-weight cows from 3001b to 4001b pold from 34s to 40s per hundred pounds. Reports were brought over during the sale of tho extraordicary prices that were forthcoming for fat lambs and for mutton, but even this would nit make the butchers stretch their limits. The day wa« excessively hot, and they all arret that tho over-fatted animal above 74 cwt upwards in any section is productive of no end of waste and all sods of loss during l the hot weather. In addition to this, wo believe that 30me of tho bigger butghers have bought forward or are now completing their forward contracts and have still to lift supplies that partially debars tho local market from getting the fullest competition. Wo quote on to-day's market the following:— Extra prime heavy-weight steers, £l6 to £lB 10s. Primo medium-weight steers, £ll to £ls Handy, £l2 to £lB 10b. Lighter and younger cattle or plain aged or unfinished from £7 to £lO 10b. Extra heavy and well-finished heifers, £ll 103 to £l3. Medium-weights, £8 10b to £lO. Third grades, from £4 10s to £7. Extra heavy cows, £lO 103 to £l2 10s. Medium, £8 10s to £9 10s. Third grades, from £4 to £7 10b. FOR BEST RESULTS, CONSIGN YOUR STOCK TO H. MATSON and CO., ALDINGTON. STORE SHEEP. Thero was a medium yarding of store eheop to-day,- including somo" Chatham Island consignments. One of the features of the sale to-dny was tho consignments of fourtooth wethers in the wool, sent forward by tho St. James station. These were keenly competed for hi graziers and made up to 4Ss lOd. Some butchers, owing to the very short yarding of fat ahcop, operated in the storo pens. There wag a big attendance of buyers, and prices throughout ehowod a ooneiderablo advance on previous erles, and the sale must be as a vory buoyant one. Two-tooth wethers that were forward were not as good quality as previous weeks. Thero were very few eweo and lambs sent forward, and those that did come to hand could not ■ tie chased ao attractive linos. Prices were as follows: ' Best owes and lambe up to 26e 6d' in the wool. Second quality Ofe 6d. Four and eix-tooth shorn wether# from MS 6d to 86b 6d. This clase for the most part were consignments from tho Chatham Islands. A pen of local wethers, four and sir-.ootha, not very forward condition, sold to 37b 9d. Two-tooth Bhom wethers made up to 26s 6d, and considering the quality this v/as a very good sale. The sale was over in a very Bhort time t and 1 many buyers who had every intention of buying went home emptyhanded. Small pen this season's lambs, rather mixed lot, and young, sold 28s 4d.
