was a good galloper in Jicr day, and won among other good races the Wellington Cup in lfiltJ. J. J-.'. Madden's six-year-old horse, Grey Lag (Star Shoot —.Miss Minnie) broke down at Belmont Park when being prepared for the second of the test races against Epinard, says an exchange. Grey Lag, who was by many considered the fastest horse in America, started in 37 races during his career for 22 firsts, nine seconds, and three thirds. His winnings totalled about £25.400, and at that lie was ninth in the list of America's greatest earners. He held the Aqueduct (Xew York) course record of 1m 49s for nine furiongs.

Prince Palatine, a great racehorse in his day, was burned to death last month in his stable, at Mr E. T. Simms's stud in Kentucky. He was by Persimmon from Lady Light-foot, and at three years won the St. Leger; the Ascot Gold Cup, Eclipse Stakes, Doncaster Cup, and Jockey Club Stakes at four years: and the Coronation Cup and Ascot Gold Cup at five. He' was raced by Mr T. Pilkington, and before lie ran in the Goodwood Cup. he was sold to Mr J. B. Joel for £.45,000, with the understanding that his price was to drop to £40,000 in the event of defeat iu that race. He was backed down to 5 to 2 on, but, so far from winnning, he only beat one in a field of six. Mr Joel consequently got him at the reduced figure, but he got rid of hiin in 1917 to the Due de Castries, a French breeder, for £26,250. The latter kept him until 1920, and then sold him to Mr Simms. The price reported was £50,000, but it is doubtful whether it was that high.
