Prince Abbey jnade his debut as a hurdler in the Thames Hurdles and ran a very creditable second (states an Auckland writer). Only for losing ground at the fences he would have won comfortably, as he had too much pace for his opponents. The outing should give hini confidence, sud he should nob be long in winning a hurdle event.

Transformer, by Thurnham—Mangamaire. wiuner of two races at Thames, was bred by Mr James McNicol. of 'Wairakau. Te Aroha, writes "Whalebone." He was sold in the "Waihou saleyards less than twelve months ago, when ho realised £3. the purchaser lieing Mr A. Forrest. The latter broke in the gelding, and at the March Meeting at Te Aroha started him in a Lack event. Transformer is yet another ona bred in this district that lias made good after being sold '"Tor song." The St. Leger winner. Salmon Trout, ws, fit si meeting at Newbury later in September, beaten by Despatch in the) Kingsclere Plate. The latter was net even coloured nil the card, but got UP 1 to score a sensational win. It was an amazing improvement on Leicester earlier in the week, when Despatch, who had recentlv been tubed, ran very badly.

Ifc was thought possible that Steve Donoliue might visit Australia at the end of this year, but ho has no intention of doing so. though he may conie later. An English exchange says that lie jna.v winter in Buenos .Aires, an offer having been made him. Tt has also been suggested that Donohue should take ttro or three other jockeys soutr with him in order that the English style of riding, be established in the Argentine.

Speculators enjoyed little success at the Levin Club's race meeting on Saturday, as on the day only one favourite, Benmure, in the Hokio Hack Handicap, -\tos successful. Equitable, -winner of the -\lanakau Handicap Hurdles, was seventh, in the order of batting, Kenyon was second favourite in the Welter Hack Handicao, Lipsnl fifth favourito in the Maiden Hack Race, Tongatotoa. tenth in the. Levin Hack, Bitters fifth in the Levin Gup, Merry Ann fourth in the Lako Hack Handicap, and Sir Pam fifth in the McDonald/ -Memorial.

W. Seobio was sufficiently recovered from his recent accident to return to his home on Saturday. W. G. Hobbs who was injured while handling a youn" horse a few days ago, left the Christchurch Hospital yesterday.

SOUTH CANTERBURY J.C.'S SPRING MEETING. The weather was perfect for the second clay of the Scnith Canterbury Jockey Club's Spring Meeting, and the course was in great order. Tlio attendance was much better than on the first day, Saturday being the half-holiday in Timaru. Fields were not | largo enough, to make the pools on tho various races big, but tho betting was more spirited than on the opening day. Tho turnover was £18,692 10s, compared with -16,548 10s for the second day Jaat year. The total for' the- Meeting ieaohed £33,363 10s, as compared with £34,391 10a last vear. Notes on the Racing. There was not much money invested on the five runners in the Levels Hurdles, but what there was was well distributed. The favourite, Frisco Mail, jumped much better than on the first day, and fence after fence ho gained lengths on his opponents. Had Kerrv Star jumped as well as tho favourito ho would have won. The two raced into tho .last obstacle together. Kerry Star bungled it, while Frisco Mail gained iengths on him. Alter that -the race was all over. Deep Drive was backed for the Juv;ai!o Handicap as if the race was all over. From a position in the middle, of the field tho daughter of Countermine was the first to 6how, and she had a good lead entering tlio straight, but as usual tired in tho sun home, and Monoxide got up -on the rails and beat her in the last few etrides. The winshowing was a great improvement on that of the first day. Joyeuse, who was second favourite, drew the outside position at the post, and when the tapes were released she wa3 tha last to get going. Racing round, the outside the Gay Lad filly had. got into a good position when the straight was reached, but in trying to get up on the rails she was stopped in short order. Marbuka blundered ehortly after the start and lost her rider, W. Paterson. who was not hurt. Paterson informed tho stewards that his mount, blundered badly owing to getting on to Saxette's heels.

Baldowa, was withdrawn from the South Canterbury Handicap, leaving sis to fa:.e the "starter. Tho half dozen got away to en even break. Rivalry, who had run a. wretched race on the first day, waa soon in, froirl and with Happy Warrior to assist her, forced tho pace. She came away from Happy AVarrior after entering tho straight, and icpt moving, lasted long enough *o beat Red AVink by a, head. Deucalion aivl Mantua, who had been running last, made great efforts to get up in the straight,- but although they closed the gap a little ihey never looked" likely to catch the leaders. Kilfane and Happy Warrior ran bad races. There were only eix runners i.i the Claremont Hack Handicap, but rhere was ."ioro bumping and jostling in this svafiil field than there should have been m a field of. twenty. Knocklyn and Cumbrae got the worst of tho start, then Los Ambus was. sent back from second place to second last. Ophir was interfered with early in the race, and again entering the straight. Los Ambus was giving away a good etart entering the straight, ' but ho ran on under pressure, and caitching Knocklyn a little unawares, had her beaten before her email rider realised tho position. Opnir ran well after much trouble. E. Shaw, the rider of Solferite, was cautioned for bumping, but, he wa3 not the only offender nor the wo r s„. Tho Stewards' Welter was another bumpin? race. Quality got chopped out at tho etart, and at the end of two furlongs Prosperity waa sent from second to a, bad lasi. Kuia had taken charge entering the straight, and running much better than on the first day 6he won easily from Mountain L.\< l n. As a. race, it was not satisfactory to aay the least of it. Guncaso was lame when pulled U There is litle to say about the Trial Handicap, a race for horses three years and older that had not won a race exceeding 100 aova in value at time of nomination. The field was a large one, and shortly after the Btart it was strung out a long_ way. Cloiitarf led all the way. Marzom was hands and pulling hard, and so were Rockfillo and Uoldspifinor, but not one of them could make any impression on the leader. Tempo came from a long way back m thc atraiglu to get up into second money. The daughter of Elysian and Sabar.£ _as if P"® would stav on provided she was allowed to get well on to her feet m the early stages of the race. Fairy Herald showed improved form on liis first day's running, and gottldrd money. He will win a race betore 10 B°r'own Lady set out to win the Kingsdown Hack AVelter all tho way, and halt-w ay up the straight it looked as if she, wji be successful, for Chickwheat was siuit i.i on the rails and Prompter was .ate, m clear of the ruck. Chickwheat aid not geo clear in time «o wm, but Prjnpter o. and had Brown measure yards from the winning post, but he /was lucKy, for had Chickwheat got clear in tune would have won for_ once his. small rider srot the Buckwheat gelding away from .he rail . and those who hemmed him in ho flew, and was easilv second at-the post. The start for the Farewell Handicap was I not one of Mr McXab's best efforts. Paddy s Hope and Corn Rigs were hopelessly lei-, while Bugle Note, Goldtown, and The Harp went away one after the other. Bugle Note never looked likely to be cim?ht. is doubtful if The Harp would haVo bcatsn him had they got off on equal terms. Solferino headed the sire 3' list for the meeting, having four winners to his credit, while Boniform was next with two. •

At tlio owner's request., tha Club's veterinary eurgeoa inspected Prosperity after tlio Stewards' Welter, he being of tlio opinion that Prosperity had been got at. The official's opinion was that the gelding was suffering from some internal trouble, the cause of which was not known. Tho Judicial Committee had A busy afternoon, as they were repeatedly called together. The results of their many deliberations were not officially supplied to tho Press "fillery, but word drifted there that humping in various races was the causo of their being called together.

The Auckland Trotting Club will <take nominations for its Summer Meeting on Friday next at 5 p.m. The fixluro extends over three days, and an attractive programme has been drawn up. The principal event on tho opening day is the Auckland Trotting- Cup Handicap, of 2000 sovs, and a gold cup valued at 100 guineas. The -Summer Cup and the President's Handicaps, run on the second and third day respectively, are both endowed with 1000 sovs, while no raco on the programme is worth less than 300 sovs. At the same lime a final payment of 8 sovs is duo for the 1924 Great Northern Derby, and first •acceptances ara due for the 1925 Derby. Training operations at headquarters are ■quiet and are likely to remain so until after Forbury Park, when trainers will be putting the final polish on their charges in view of the holiday fixtures. '

A special horse ■train will leave Christchurch for Dunedin on "Wednesday <at 7.50 a.m., carrying horses engaged at the Forbury Park T.C.'s Spring Meeting. It will arrive at its destination at 6 p.m.

The Tasmanian trainer P. Gregg is working the pacer Emulate at Addington. This pacer is backward and it will be a. few. weeks before he is at bi3 best. Snorter, in the same stable, is at present put of commission.

P. Riddle is keping Delavan O.uest up to the collar in view of Forbury Park. Tho other members of his team, Marion Style, Kissing Cup, Sheik, and Orion, are doingslow work and most likely will raco atAuckland next month.

E. Berry's pair, Squatter and Logandale, are on the improve. The latter will probably race on the West Coast at the Christmas and New Year Meetings. D. Withers has a useful team in work, including Loganwood, Little Logan, Humariki, Audominion and Miss Mabel "Wood. All of them are well forward.

Don "Wild has resumed work, but is still causing his trainer somo anxiety, and there is every probability that the son of Don Pronto and "Wild Duck will require a further spell. After a lengthy retirement from .the raco track. Double Event has been recommissioned. Ho is looking big and healthy, and in future will race as a gelding. AV. J. Tomkinson's team to race at Forbury Park will include Bell Harold, Pearlie Chimes, and Adair, and judging by their Addington form both Bell Harold and Pearlie Chimes should race well.

Leo Norris is showing signs of unsoundness and he is to be fired and turned out for a lengthy spell. Cr. S. Smith is giving Bellfashion a short let up, and at present. 13 confining his attention to Tinevalc, Jim Logan and Peter King. H. B. Hubbard is keeping Logan Bov in strong work in view of the New Brighton T.C.'s Summer Meeting. The course at Alexandra Park was in good order on Saturday for the opening day of the Otahuhu T.C.'s Spring Meeting, and in the majority of. tile races, the placed horses improved 011 their handicaps. Speculation was brisk, and the ■totalisator turnover showed an increase of £6200.

Floraline, an aged gelding by Florizel from Salverdash, showed improved" form and accounted for nineteen others in the Introductory Handicap. He is a. useful trotter and should win somo more money this season.

Betty Moko, the three-year-old filly by Peter Moko from Papaiina, trotted a fine race into third place. She covered the journey in 3m C 9 --ss, which is a smart performance for a, filly of her age. After finishing second to Sparkling Pronto in the Maugere Handicap, Childe Audubon was produced later in the clay and annexed tho Stewards' Handicap. He is a speedy pacer but at present, does not stay too well.

By winning the Jellieoe Handicap in 4m SOs, First Carbine showed a return to his best form. The Auckland-owned pacer was freely raced without success at Addington early in the month, but judging by his "display, the racing greatly improved "hi® and he is now back to form. ..

Man o "War paced one of his best races .0 date By finishing a dead heat with' Pita,10a ior second. The Anatralian-brS? pacerwas on lOSyds and covered the two miles in 4m _ whilo Pitaroa who has been regarded more as a sprinter than a stayer surprised many bv seeing out the 'two milesi in good style. Linden was favourite; lie registered 4m 30 2-os, but was beaten into fourth place.
