A BIG SURF.
AT NEW BRIGHTON AND < SUMNER. A big surf and an abnormal tide were scon at New Brighton yesterday. The heavy seas not only came up to the stone wall of the esplanade, the inside of which it undermined, but it also swept over it- The unusual sight was witnessed by a large number of people. , Throughout the whole of yesterday there was a continual stream of traffic into and through Sumner, the citizens of Christchurch and outlying districts taking advantage of the calm that followed the storm by visiting the seaside. There a magnificent spectacle met their eyes, as a very heavy sea was running, the waves mounting to a great height and dashing against the breakwater at Scarborough and against the rocks surrounding Cave Bock. At Head 6treet the high tide nearly reached the road, the force of the waves pounding one on top of the other up the hoacli sending a stream tip past the sandhills. At Taylor's Mistake the same sight met the eye, the view from the top of the hill, looking down into the bay. being particularly impressive. Vessels arriving at Lyttelton yesterday reported that a very heavy sea was running on the coast yesterday morning. There was a considerable range in Lyttelton harbour, and surf was breaking :irros3 the entrance to Chnrteris Uav.
