Tiie death occurred yesterday morning of Mr Edward Red vers Boucher, eldest son of Mr and Mrs W- H. Boucher, of Grrymout'i. The deceased, who was 24 years of age, contracted pneumonia several weeks ago, and never recovered. At the funeral this afternoon at Karoro cemetery, the Rev. J. F. Martin read the burial service. The 44-hour "week is to be put into operation on the Westland section of the railways to-morrow. Ross Lime Works. There was a large attendance of farmers at the official opening of Donnelly's Creek bridge, which gives access to the lime works at Ross, on Saturday. Nearly 300 persons, comprising pupils of the Hokitika School and their parents, were also present at the function, the day being observed as the school's annual excursion. The neighbouring farmers arc naturally jubilant at the completion of the work in-such a short.time, as the lime company; which is "a co-operative' concern, has been greatly handicapped by the expense, incurred in having to ford Donnelly's Creek. Bowling. The official opening of the Runanga Bowling Club's green took place ou Saturday. Missing Seaman. The enquiry into the disappearance of. Henry Thomas. Orley, a fireman on the Titoki, was- TC-opened on-Satur-day, Mr W. Meldrum, Coroner, presiding. Captain Tickerman said that Orley .disappeared from the Titoki. on May Ib'th, but the matter was not reported to.him till the l!Uh, when he made an entry in the official log and got into communication with the police. The enquiry was adjourned till Monday for the production of evidence by the police. Kumara Borough. The District Health Officer has informed the Kumara Borough Council that in view-of its failure to contribute to the salary.of the Health Inspector, it is proposed to require the Council to have the work of disinfection and control of sanitation carried out by one of the borough officers. Hospital Funds. The recent campaign for funds for the Grey River Hospital has resulted in nearly £.500 being obtained for this worthy cause. Customs Duties. For the month of October the Customs duties collected at Greymouth , amounted to £3616 Is 2d, and beer duty to £l3l 16s 2d. j Mining Matters. WESTPORT ITEMS. (special to "thb pbiss.") WESTPORT, November 1. The projected loadings for the port of Westport for the week amount to -11,275 tons. A benefit match was played on Victoria Square this afternoon for the benefit of Tiso.Davis, the Buller Rugby representative player. The profits arc expected to be about £2O. A. H. Griffiths, Railway Department, and the popular secretary of St. John's Tennis Club, is leaving next week on transfer to Christchurch.

The English literature session of the "W.E.A. closed on Friday night with a social function in St. Andrew's Hall, at which the Rev. A. Miller, lecturer, presided. The programme included musical competitions, reading of extracts from Australian and New Zealand poets, and speeches. A dainty and enjoyable supper was served. Mr W. Kerr received a hearty vote of thanks for his excellent honorary work as secretary. The winners of competitions were Mrs Powell, Mr Howie, and Miss Paul.

The Canterbury Progress League delegates, Messrs H. H. Smith, W. K. McAlpine, H. M, Chrystall, and P. K. Climie, arrived in Westport on Friday night, and on Saturday morning, in company with the following representatives of the Buller Progress League, Messrs Fox (president), Harknesa (secretary), and Betts, paid a visit of inspection to the Tekura section of the Buller-Inangahua railway. Mr Laurenson, Public Works engineer, accompanied the party, who travelled as far as Cascade Creek. The visiting delegates wero impressed, and expressed the opinion that the line should be speedily completed.
