Willi the large increase in motor traffic in Lyttclton in the last year or two attention has bom drawn to the fact that the borough is badly in need of traffic by-laws i'j control net only motor-cars and trucks, but other vcb/cu'ar'traffic. At present motorist--, in the port are only subject to the. re-iilations ot the Police Offences Act. and the Motor Vehicles Act. and these m manv cases are insufficient and at times difficult of operation. The question of parking p.ace3, tor instanc?, icquire; dealing with. At present cars can be left anywhere in the streets for any length of time tinder "Rafferty Ruies>," os one resident describes it. The non-observance of the rule of the road (in this resnect horse drivers are said to be worse offenders tlian .motorists), speeding around, corners, "scorching," especially at nigh* time, bv youthful racing cyclists, are the chief subjects cf complaint and undoubtedly require- attention. It is suggested that the verv- complete traffic by-laws of the Chnstchit'rch Cit-v Council might bo tauen as a, basis on which to frame by-laws for the Be-rough- of Lyttelton. Eance. The final dance of the season organised bv the Citizens' Committee of the Lytialton Marine Band was held in the Excelsior Hall on Saturday night, when, considering the inclement weather, there was a, very satisfactorv attendance.
