LAWN TENNIS.
AKAKOA CLUB. The Aikaroa Tennis Club, - after being disappointed twico by tho weather, 6ucoeeded in opening its season -under ideal conditions on Thursday afternoon. Mr E. E. Le Lievre, the president, in carrying out tho formal part of the proceedings, congratulated members on the success attending- their efforts last season, and extended hearty good- wishes for a. continuance of tho same good fortune. He was pleased to know that the •financial position of the club was so satisfactory, and that the membership was increasing. There was need for more court accommodation in Akaroa and he was glad the Borough Council had in view tho. laying do\pi of new municipal tennis courts close by. One of tho conditions attached to this proposition waa that tho club should undertake to provide interest and sinking- fund on tho loan money needed. He would be prepared to givo the club £lO annually towards this. In. addition he had pleasure in handing over a handsome silver cup as a trophy for tho ladies' singles championship,' tho winner for two successive years to be-, come the owner. Ho then formally declared tho season open. Hearty applause greeted the president'sgenerous gifts. Play was then commenced, and as there wae an unusually large attendance, both courts were kept busily occupied.
