SOUTH ISLAND MAIN TRUNK.

PROGRESS LEAGUE'S INVESTI-

GATION. * , " The party ~ representing" the" Canterbury Progress League which starts tomorrow on a tour of investigation, of Marlborough and Nelson in connexion with the route of tho South" Island Main Trunk'railway will consist of Messrs H. Herbert Smith (chairman),. W. K. McAlpine, and P. E. Glmiie (organiser). Mr H. M. Crystall, consulting engineer, will accompany the party in an honorary capacity, and has consented to act as technical adviser and photographer. On Saturday Mr Climie received the following telegram from tho Marlborough l'rogrcss lieaguc: "This League suggests that your committee should leave on "Wednesday, the 32nd, instead of Tuesday, the 21st. The dates 'of your proposed! itinerary clash with the A. and P. Show; a number of our executive are members and others, whom we would wish to meet you, are members of tho show executive, and are likewise exhibitors, thus precluding them from being able to attend and conduct your party. Otherwise your proposals are satisfactory." In order to meet, tne situation referred to above, Mr Climie informed a reporter on Saturday that the party will spend an extra day at lvaikoura in examining the country in the vicinity of that centre. The date of departure from Cliristchureh could not be altered as arrangements had been completed for tho uso of horses; an alteration would also involve upsetting the Kai'ioura arrangements. An extra day in the Eaikoura district was really neces«arv as in tho original itinerary not quite enough time. was allowed. Whether this alteration in the jpart.y s plans would necessitate delav in its departure from Blenheim for Nelson, Mr Climio could not, say at present: an attempt would be made o\crt»ake the extra dav spent at Kaikoura by reducing the party s 6 tay in Marlborough. If this is not found possible, the Nelson people would be advised to expect it in Nelson a day later than that set out in the itinerary as originally deciaed upon.
