A TRAGIC FIRE.
WOMAN BURNED TO DEATH. (Br CABLE PRESS ASSOCIATION—COrTRIGHTI (AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) SYDNEY, October IS. A tragic fire, resulting in the death of a woman, Mrs C. Yates, aged 70, and tho narrow escape of twin babies, occurred in a residential establishment in Darlinghurst late last night. The owner of the premises smelt smoke and rushed upstairs just in time to remove her babies. She heard a woman in the room where the scat of tho firo was apparently located, and screamed for help. A passing seaman, Edward Bess, made several gallant attempts to rescue the woman, but the roof fell in on him ajid he Was compelled to retire. By the time the brigade arrived the room was a mass of flame and a further attempt at rescue hopeless.
