The diplomatic hodv at Peking has instructed the Shanghai authorities to deport "Little Hsu." He will probably he sent to Japan. The situation in Shanghai and vicinity is now quiet. The Fukieni General. Suu Chuanfang. who broke the Chekiang resistance from the south, has arrived in Shanghai. Beibao Shan, Chi's Chief of Staff, has also arrived. Heavy fighting continues on the Shanhaikwan front. An official Chihli message states that Marshal Chang Tso-lin-s forces have been driven out beyond the Great AY all, while a Mukden official telegram says that Chang Tso-lin's troops occupied Shanhaikwan yesterday. The merchant volunteers in Canton were decisively defeated bv soldiers. The defeat was largely due to fires, which swept thousands, of buildings. The number of casualties is unknown. Soldiers slashed and stabbed excited civilians. Many people attempted to enter Shamien with their valuables, but only those properly authorised were allowed to enter.
