Recently publicity was given to the fact that a quartz reef supposed to be gold bearing had been discovered in tie Rotorua district, somewhere in the vicinity of Mount Edgecombe. Hopes were entertained thai the find might prove a valuable one, :
Specimens of the quartz have now been examined % assayers, and it is stated that the sample submitted by the nrospectors showed no trace of gold. !Tpecimens taken by officials of the Mines Department showed the reef to be gold bearing, but only to a value of £l a ton, which of'course, is not at all a payable proposition. The prospectors, it is understood, have been advised to put.in crossdrives, and when these are finished, Government experts will take farther samples of the reef.
