Maseagnl, tlie composer, with an opera company numbering 1000, is gtrantjeg in Berlin owing to the failure of the production of Aida. Mascagni received £IO,OOO to iinauce the venture, but the box office receipts were so small that salaries could not he paid. Finally tho company refused to sing. Three Italian directors have been arrested for issuing cheques which \vere not met.
