PAPER PULP INDUSTRY.

POSSIBILITIES OF WEST COAST. (SiSCIAL TO "TH« PBISS.") • GIIEYMOUTH, September 18. As a means of profitably utilising tho slabs which arc a by-product of sawmilling, the paper pulp industry has commended itself to an English firm interested in various parts of the world, and from timo to time negotiations have been entered into with milling companies on tho coast for an option over tho supply of material. Tho term hitherto was ten years, and the doubts that were entertained as to the continuity of supmv prevented anything definite from being done in the direction ot erecting a plant. Recently, however options of 20 years' duration have bewi obtained at a large number of sawmills, and a factory at Gladstone siding is projected. Mr Montgomery, of Christchurch, -who has been engaged in investigating the possibilities of the schemes has left tor the Old Country, where lie will submit his report, and it is confidently anticipated that before long Westland will reap a benefit from the utilisation of what is now regarded as a nuisance at the saw-mills. Options have also been secured the freeholds of properties of Mr Grant and tho TCuss familv at New River, in i preparation for the securing of an I extensive site. '
